Well here’s a question, do you take on Skinner’s deal for 11th OA+? Maybe a top prospect added? Flames give Mangiapane in return? I doubt we’re anywhere in 3 years. And we could buy him out in a year or two. Depending on when we need the space.
This draft is so wide open that I would love to get another pick in the 7-13 range.

sure, if I'm the Flames I go for this type of deal 100%. I'd probably trade Rasmus too. Burn it down, stockpile picks and prospects, weaponize cap space.

So as recently as 2017, scouts/GMs have been getting it WAY wrong.
It isn’t about whether or not Parekh is Orr.
He certainly looks to be at least a Quinn Hughes comparable.
Would you trade Matt Coronato to make sure you got Quinn Hughes? (Former 7th overall pick, after noted cEnTrEs Barrett Hayton and Jesperi Kotkaniemi)
Because I would.
And I hope Conroy would.
|
Of course you would, but the difference between comparables and reality is that comparables don't always pan out.
Do you trade Matt Coronato and the ninth overall pick for Adam Boqvist?
Nope. But he was selected right after Hughes and was considered to be a fairly close prospect to Hughes that draft year and could have been picked higher than Hughes.

This summer's prospect poll is going to be a blast with all the high picks this year and recent prospects acquired.
Don't think we've ever seen a bigger year over year change.

Adam Boqvist had 3 points in 22 games across two Swedish leagues in 2017-18.
Quinn Hughes had 29 in 37 for Michigan.
Hardly the same thing. Even if you thought Boqvist might end up comparable, there was nothing to justify taking him ahead of Quinn Hughes, let alone trading up for him.
Look at how Parekh outscored the other D at the top of the draft.
Levshunov has 35 in 38.
Dickinson has 70 in 68.
Silayev has 11 in 67.
Buium has 50 in 42.
Parekh has 96 in 66.
One of these things is not like the others.
I understand that points aren’t everything for a Defenseman.
But watch Parekh move. Watch him cut. He looks like a liquid playing among solids.
Conroy and co might not share the same opinion of the player as I do.
It might take even more to get said deal done, at which point it probably isn’t the wisest decision.
But if Coronato is the cost to move up to 5 (for example) and get him, I’d pay it and I wouldn’t look back.

100% and will also be curious to see where we end up landing on rankings of team prospect pools thereafter.

Any thoughts on cattons size? With tij moving up apparently, I return to Catton and put my hopes in him.

I would actually argue that Buium's points in a much tougher league is at least as impressive as Parekh's. Both are historical outliers and incredible.

Catton would be a home run. He's my #1 choice for where we're drafting, with the assumption that Celebrini Levshunov Demidov Lindstrom Parekh Buium Tij are gone.

It’s a non issue.
Catton is 5 ft 11 175 right now. He’ll play at 185 when he’s done filling out.
Many great players in this games history are this size.

I get that you like Parekh a lot, and I appreciate some of your points (although comparing point production equally, regardless of the league is very problematic; and even Levshunov outscored Hughes in his draft year in the same league), but the issue to me is that most paid scouts disagree with you that Parekh is the best d-man in the draft.
And he could be available when the Flames pick, just like Buim, or Silayev or Dickinson could be available, who each has some scouts saying they'll be the best d in the draft.
Flames are going to get a great prospect at number 9. They shouldn't be using their top prospect to trade up a few picks. That's how you kill a rebuild before it even starts.

I wouldn’t waste the first pick of this rebuild on an NCAA D or a Russian with limited offensive upside.
And I understand that the consensus is what it is, but I simply don’t value the collective group think of NHL front offices/media that highly.
In 2008, the best Defenseman draft of the 21st century, Erik Karlsson was drafted after Drew Doughty, Zach Bogosian, Alex Pietrangelo, Luke Schenn, Tyler Myers and Colton Teubert.
How many of those guys are you taking over Erik Karlsson? At best, two.
Most of those scouts are still employed.
In the back half of that 1st round, you then had Jake Gardiner, Luca Sbisa,
Michael Del Zotto, Tyler Cuma, and concluding with John Carlson.
Five Norris trophies in that 1st round.
This could well be 2008 all over again, and I just don’t want Teubert or Myers or Schenn if I can have Karlsson/Carlson.

Scott Wheeler on the Athletic had this to say about Tij when writing up his mock draft:
"I believe the Flames would be interested in one of the top D here but I’m not convinced they’d take Yakemchuk if he’s the only one left. The Flames-Hitmen ownership ties and his Calgary roots (he trains locally with Doug Crashley, etc.) are a factors worth considering, but I wonder if their familiarity works against him, too. He wasn’t in the top 10 for most teams I’ve spoken to about him. I believe he hurt his case in the testing/interview process at the combine, too. If it’s not a D here, the belief is Iginla and Sennecke will go in this range and I think both fit with the Flames. I kept coming back to Iginla, though. There’s some smoke there, and not just because of his dad!"

I thought Iginla interviewed extremely well, this comment just seems strange to me.

It might be - I’m just not comfortable spending the highest pick in 10 years on an American NCAA player.

I think the interview comment is about Yakemchuk.
Who I would not take 9th under any circumstances.
