PHI did well when Gauthier refused to sign in grabbing Drysdale, so chances are you can turn anyone into an asset unless you wait too late - in which case you get a lesser asset.

Explain how making it more difficult for these players to move around would make it happen more often.

I'm thinking good prospects are going to refuse ELCs from teams where they don't want to go, knowing full well that a more preferable team to them will offer them a deal and happily pay the equivalent draft pick because not only do they get the prospect right then who is further along, but they get one that they know is already on a path to success.
For instance, with your proposed idea Michkov probably tells the Flyers thanks but no thanks because he knows as a "free agent" a team he more prefers will certainly offer him a contract. The Rangers come along and offer him a ELC, he signs because now he gets to jump straight to the NHL and be on the Presidents trophy winning team. The Rangers get the guy taken 7th overall last year and the Flyers get compensation from the Rangers? Well they have the 30th overall pick in 2024. That sounds like a great deal for the Flyers lol
That kind of scenario would play out year after year and likely multiple times per year, so yeah....disastrous IMO

Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with playing in Canada

The Winnipeg Jets’ 2022 first-round pick, Rutger McGroarty, is likely to be traded, a league source told The Athletic on Saturday.
The league source indicated that McGroarty’s view of his long-term future with Winnipeg changed since the conclusion of his NCAA season.
Winnipeg wanted to sign McGroarty to a professional contract in April but was unwilling to promise a path to playing time.
The Jets didn’t view McGroarty as ready to make that kind of impact, nor were they ready to guarantee him a roster spot in the NHL next season.

I wonder if Anaheim jumps in here and moves Zegras to the Jets in a McGroarty trade. They have been rumoured to be willing to trade Zegras in the past. The Jets could use a 2nd line center and Shiefelle would insulate Zegras pretty well and let Zegras do what he does well.

He wants a guaranteed spot? Sorry but 4 years of college doesn’t entitle you straight to nhl.

Man, entitled prospects that want a gifted roster spot....
Go earn it, if you're as good as you think you are it shouldn't be an issue.

McGroarty, Perfetti, Schmidt for Andersson+Mangiapane (50% retained)+28th overall?
Landing 2 young NHL ready players would help with the retool. Steinberg has mentioned Perfetti along with Lundell as players he thinks the flames could target due to their age, and fit on the team. Florida might not be able to afford Lundell if they keep Reinhart and Perfetti wants more opportunity as well. I do doubt the jets trade both.

Why shouldn’t a player do what is best for his career? If he thinks the Jets aren’t the best team for him moving forward, then why shouldn’t he try and see if he can get traded somewhere else.
If there is no path for advancement at my current employer then you better believe that I am going to go see what my options are with other employers.

Lol nice one. Rutger McGroarty isn't a real name, you're not fooling me. Is he best friends with Scrottie McBurgerballs?

Ya. Who wants one of the best captains this team has ever had to come back for that last inning or two of his career to provide leadership to a group of young rebuilding kids. Let alone the last thing Calgary needs is more community involvement and service from those who are fortunate and can give back. Especially if Gio actually wants to come back to Calgary. This team has too many good storylines going for it already.

Here's the story saying Gio wants to keep playing: https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs...c2fcc1940.html
Quote:
It’s not clear whether the Maple Leafs want Mark Giordano to come back, but it is clear the veteran defenceman intends to play next season.
“Mark has made the decision that he’s playing for a few more years,” said his agent, Rich Winter. “He feels very confident. He’s been talking to a lot of people who tell him: Don’t quit until they make you.”
Giordano is 40 and was the oldest player in the NHL last year, on an $800,000 (U.S.) contract. He had three goals and six assists in 46 games, then didn’t play in the post-season. He did take a spin in warm-ups before Game 6 of the first round at Scotiabank Arena, perhaps his last appearance in a Leafs jersey.
“He clearly wants to play,” said Winter.

From Pagnotta on twitter:
As the Hurricanes carry out trade talks with teams about Martin Necas, the word is Carolina is looking to complete a 'hockey trade' not a deal strictly for future assets. Teams like Nashville, Seattle, Montreal among those still believed to be in the mix.

I love Rutger McGroarty, but there’s not many teams that can guarantee a roster spot. He might say this isn’t about playing in Winnipeg, but I think it is.
Awesome, awesome player though.

There are also hordes of independent scouts and analysts studying these players. They all agree that after the top 2, there's no clear ranking. What's their motive to lie?

I don't see where Pepsi said the signing team would get the prospect ‘right then’.

He could have done that in any case.

No, he doesn't, because the team that drafts him still has an exclusive two- or four-year window to sign him before anyone else can poach him.
The ONLY thing Pepsi is proposing to change is to give teams compensation – not to let drafted players jump ship immediately. That would be absurd, and defeat the entire idea of the draft.

Does 28 pick get McGroarty? Guessing not. I agree though, not many teams going to guarantee a spot that will offer more.
