In fairness, given the razor thin margin, if anyone thinks someone "needs glasses" by having this call mistaken, they're the one that needs their eyes checked as obviously you're seeing what you want to see.

Here is still photo, impossible to tell in real time however. No idea what the puck carrier was thinking, stick handling along the blue line with no one checking him, GAIN THE ZONE!!

What a plan.
Start rebuilding in 2010
Win the McDavid lottery against all odds 5 years later
And voila, just like that, NINE years later game 7 of the finals!
|
And don't get me started on how the Flames got Bennett when all intentions was to initially draft Drai.

How is it that VAN, DAL, and FLO have all struggle to score against what, on paper, is a weak team defensively?

There’s still hope all. Bob can still steal the game like he did in game 1. I get momentum and all, but each game is unique. Streaks start and streaks end, so let’s hope the streak ends Monday. Go Cats!

Some teams tank and will never make it to game 7 of the finals to be honest. Just look at the leafs.

Absolutely true, it took Edmonton four tries

I don't think I've ever seen a team become so limp and useless in the Cup Final before. Florida has just completely fallen apart. Hate to say it but I just don't see them winning this thing. Oilers don't deserve a cup but god damn they're about to win one

Oilers figured out that Bob has a weakness on the blocker side and have been going there relentlessly since. I doubt Bob will be stealing any more games unless he sorts that out quick.

It takes time to build a quality team that can go deep in the playoffs consistently. The Avalanche started in 2009 with Duchene, the Panthers in 2011 with Huberdeau, the Lightning in 2008 with Stamkos, the Oilers in 2010 with Hall.
Flames ownership (and we as fans) ought to learn from what has happened, and do better. Throwing shade at/discrediting the “plan” of other teams that have been emphatically better than our team is a futile exercise. You may disagree with the Oilers/Avalanche/Panthers/Lightning approach, but those teams have better players and have found more success than our team. The NHL draft is a structural system that rewards teams for putting in the effort (sucking, which is a hard process for an organization and their fans to endure), and working within/making use of that system is how you build a winner.

Think the panthers are done. Can only say congrats to oilers for a historic comeback. Maybe flames management will get their heads out of their ass and produce a competitive team in 3-5 years.

I woke up this morning think about how much I hate the Oilers.
But I think I almost hate the Panthers more now.

They walked around in the desert for 5 years and then lucked out and won the McLottery. They had no business winning that one either. Typical NHL changing the rules right at a key moment when a generational player is draft eligible.
Then it still took them 9 years to get to the finals. They only have 4 players left on the roster that were on the roster in McDavid's rookie year.
That is not a plan.

I do think the notion that you have to tank in order to win is a bit overblown on this forum right now.
The problem the Flames have had for the past couple of decades, is not focusing their team building through the draft. That was a critical mistake; especially for a small market team that's on most players No-Trade list. The mindset should be to retain and accumulate as many early round draft picks as you can. This method should ensure that you can have players that will continually graduate to fill in the depth of the team at lower costs with room for growth, and some of those players could be gems found that are key contributors, or even superstar performers.
The constant turnover of early round draft picks in trades for post-apex players or big contracts spent through Free Agency, while not having a built out prospect base with budding players is what got the Flames stuck in mediocracy for as long as they have been. Hopefully with Conroy and Iginla at the helm, there will be dedicated patience to try to build to through the draft now and in the future, and not expedite the process. The goal should be good for a long time, not a short time.

That picture is not conclusive. You can't even see the puck. If that is what yhry claim was conclusive evidence then just chalk it up as one more call that falls the Oilers way. Just like the Coleman distinct kicking motion goal. Think there are some Oiler fans in that war room in Toronto.

I’ve been questioned when saying that we are looking at, at least 6 years before we are competitive. When in reality, we will be lucky if it’s only 6 years

I hope your right. If you're not, I'm going to have to ponder finding another sport to follow. Or maybe a different league? Maybe I should just become a hardcore WHL fan.
I don't want it to come to that.

They won 4 lotteries and the only one that matters they had a 90% chance of not winning. Lol great plan. They were trying to bring in players like Heatly (wouldn't waive) and tried to sign Jagr as UFA. It was a fluke, actually multiple flukes. I don't take financial advice from some hillbilly that won the lottery.
There are actual examples of how to rebuild/retool but the Oilers aren't one of them

What do you mean? Oilers drafted Draisaitl ahead of the Flames pick.
