The Lakers and Kings had the same owner for many years. Jack Kent Cooke bought the Lakers in 1965, and was awarded the Los Angeles NHL expansion franchise in 1966. Cooke personally selected purple (or, as he called it, "Forum Blue") and gold for the Kings because they were 'regal' colours, and
changed the Lakers to match. Cooke also changed the Lakers' logo when he bought the team, adding the "speed lines"; the Kings' logo was changed to match in the mid-'70s.
Cooke sold the Kings, Lakers, and the Forum to Jerry Buss in 1979, and sold the Kings to Bruce McNall in 1987.
McNall of course changed the colours from "Forum Blue and Gold" to black and silver when he acquired Gretzky in the summer of '88. Now, the interesting thing about that is Gretzky owned the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL at the time. He bought them in 1985 and changed the colours from blue and yellow to...
Looks awfully familiar, doesn't it? (And yes, that's a young Marty Gelinas)
