Just got through Bahl's Flames Talk interview - plenty to like in there...awkwardly long interview, but it was good.
The interesting part was about his injury history and how his entire rookie season (23/24) was effectively done on the back of not being able to workout/prepare for the vast majority of the 2023 Summer.
It'll be fun to see if he can keep improving.

I love these first round picks. Zary looks like an absolute keeper and I hope Pelletier and Coronato can get to that level.
Conroy is on track here.

He’ll automatically be the team 3rd best dman, top 4 at least at this point.
He’ll get plenty of chance to prove himself

Happy to see that Pospisil was not traded as many posters here were expecting or wanting.

Markstrom had no value a year ago, when he had the horrible season.
To get anything at all is a win after that. With the added bonus that now we are worse, making our 1st round pick the next 2 years likely much better.

Expecting, wanting. I feel like those are very two different thing compared to more accurate words like, accepting or understanding.
Like, I wasn't expecting or wanting pops traded but I would have accepted or understood it if it happened and it garnered the Flames a larger return i.e 10th overall.

Coronato is on track, Pelletier just needs a lucky rabbits foot or something to get a full healthy season under his belt.

I can't find the original post to quote, but that Athletic write-up saying that Conroy has lost every trade he made is dumb for so many reasons.
First, most of the trades he made either included futures or was straight up for futures. It will take years to fairly judge the trades (Tanev and Zadorov trades for example).
Second, the Toffoli and Lindholm trades are showing really good early returns.
Third, it's impossible to say if something is a bad trade when you don't know what else was on the table, if anything at all.

I enjoy a lot of what The Athletic has to offer, but their trade grade articles are consistently terrible, with a complete absence of real thought. Eric D's take on the trade was the only one that made any sense. He still gave the advantage to NJ but understood why it's positive long-term for the Flames.

Seems like a win for me.

Agreed.
I break it down a little differently, but come to the same result:
The full meal, 50% retention for two years ($6m total), based on historical numbers, is worth a late 1st all by itself. If Markstrom + retention was in the ballpark of 10 OA, that means Markstrom without retention was worth a late first – which is what they are probably getting from Jersey.
Bahl was drafted 55th overall, and unlike the majority of picks in that range, he's established himself as an NHL regular. Spitballing, I'd say his value has improved since he was drafted because there's no longer a risk that he will bust. If he's worth an early second, then that's fair value for the smaller amount that the Flames retained. (PuckPedia says it's worth the 38th pick.)
In short, the package they got for Markstrom wasn't as flashy as the #10 pick, but pretty close in total value.
By the way, Sean O'Leary at The Score gives the Flames a B+ on the deal:

I don’t recall anyone wanting Pospisil to be traded. What I recall is some people suggesting he could be an ask by NJ if the deal involved sending the 10OA pick to the Flames.

The trade is fair and in the end the value will depend on wheee the pick lands, which is the risk and reward of trading for future firsts.
If it's 12th overall it's going to be seen as a huge win this time next year.
If it's 30th overall then people will look back with disappointment.
If it lands around 22 then people probably see it as mostly fair.
Its just how it works with the variability of value when it comes to 1st round picks.
I remember Sabres fans being so excited in 2019 when the Blues were really struggling and the 1st they got in return for ROR looked like it could be a top 10 pick...then the Blues went on the run and won the cup and all of a sudden pick 32 was disappointing. Thats the fun of it all though.

Plus rumors that Markstrom has / had groin issues that flared up more often than not means it was time to graduate Wolf.
Hearing Vladar is on track for full recovery is great BUT...it has me a little more than concerned as I'd rather not have a goalie coming back from that kind of surgery to be a backup for what's supposed to be a very good Wolf .
Ultimately, what does this team play like in front of Wolf. And please dear God no more Zone D. Hopefully the new assistant coaches input on that changes / removes that system sooner than later

Also on how Bahl plays. Based on his underlying stats, he's very solid without the puck, just not great with it. If he can be a poor man's Tanev, but a decade younger, that will also make the trade look good.

Most of the league uses some form of zone defence. I think you're wishing for the moon on this one.

Good trade, really needed Markstrom out of here to give Wolf a big chunk of starts and the Flames a chance to be bad enough to draft top 10 again in 2025.
Way to go Conroy.

I said there might be teams that would overpay, and that Pospisil is a risk for a short Ferland-like career. I like Pospisil but he’s a guy that might be a bit of a flash in the pan.
