I don't know anything about Bahl but he had decent counting stats for a defensive d-man in his D+1 season (34 pts in 68 games) and in his D+2 season (31 pts in 54 games) and played for Canada in the World Juniors. He's already reached his floor as a #6 at 23 in his first full season in the NHL. I think some posters here are undervaluing him.

That will go down as one of the stupidest conditions to place on a pick in the history of the NHL.
So basically we want flames to finish 1-10 and Florida to make the playoffs?

Was obviously hoping for a 2024 pick but whatever. It’s a fine return.
But man are we going to struggle next year. Yeesh. That’s a rough lineup.

I think there should have been a little more sweetening for the retention but that's my only gripe.
Another 1st is another 1st.
Markstrom will keep them out of the bottom 10. Hopefully still in the bottom 15 though, heh.

It's very likely that the Flames pick twice in the first round at minimum for the next three years (unless NJD 1st moves to 2026, than 3 times in that draft, and only one in 2025).
With potential trades of Andersson, Mangiapane, Kuzmenko, Sharangovich through next year up to the deadline, could have a plethora of young 1st rounders ready to join the team by the time the new building opens. Heck maybe Backlund and Coleman play well and can generate 1st rounders the following deadline too.

If the Devils end up trading this year's 10OA pick it would provide more information on how good or bad this Markstrom trade is.

I got a text from a one of the scouts I communicate regularly with who said Flames win this deal 2x on Sunday.
"KB is Big, Mean and Still hasn't flushed out his body or skating. Defensively sound. He's on tough SOB and makes a really good first pass. 6'6 230 at 230, He's well conditioned and committed to improving his game and He will protect some of those high skilled smaller D flames have like Hunter Brzustewicz <Insert Drool Emoji> ...Tell the people in your neighborhood they probably just got Robyn Regehr."
Follow up text.

Does this mean the Devils can't trade the 2026 pick, because now both their 2025 and 2026 picks are locked up. Once the 2025 pick comes to the Flames, assuming it does, they could trade 2026 but not before right?

Here are my initial thoughts:
1. I'm glad this is done, at least that way NJ fans can stop taking shots at Markstrom. Saying he's old, and a sub .900 goalie.
2. I split the trade as a 2nd for retention, and 2nd + Bahl for Markstrom. It's not bad, but it sure makes it seem as though we overpaid for capspace in the Monahan trade.
3. I think this organization is really working hard at trying to develop the next Tanev, or at least a couple of solid stay at home D. I think this plays to Huska's strength of developing D.
4. The Flames defense next season raises more questions than answers. We have a ton of D, but I don't think we can properly slot most of them. Out of the waiver eligible guys I expect:
Bahl - Andersson
Weegar - Miromanov
Kylington - Pachal
Solovyov - Hanley
I was hoping to see a more proven D acquired in free agency, but now I wonder if Andersson is going to get traded at the draft.
5. This will really be a trial by fire for both Wolf and Vladar, hopefully our coaches manage to limit the type of chances they struggle with the most.
6. I wonder if Poirier, Brzustewicz, or our 2024 draft pick force their way onto the team out of camp.

They can't without adding more conditions.

In a community with 1100 people in a trade discussion I'm sure there are 5% that are over the top optimistic and 5% that are over the top pessmistic.
No one is debating that.
But to single out one of the 5% groups and somehow make them the CP collective hive brain is silly.

They would need to ask the Flames to waive the condition. Considering it's a condition that doesn't benefit the Flames, they probably would.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are we in the midst of Calgary's first rebuild since 2004? It feels like since 2004 we've had the "we can win it all" approach and 20 years later we've finally accepted our fate...and it's time to build from the ground up.
20 years?

They can trade it conditionally. The Panthers did it in the Tkachuk trade. They traded a top 10 protected 1st in 2024 for Giroux. And then traded the 2025 pick for Tkachuk with the condition that it would become the 2026 1st if they end up giving the 2025 pick for Giroux.
