Right but did he say when? We just got a 3rd pairing dman and a 1st in 2025. How are those 2 pieces going to help us this year?
#Flames GM Craig Conroy: “Today’s trade demonstrates our focus on the infusion of young talented players into our roster as well as acquiring important draft capital, while maintaining our commitment as a playoff competitive team.
That is the quote. I am having a pretty hard time spinning this into a trade that keeps them a playoff competitive team. Starting goalie for a third pairing dman and a 1st. I really see the commitment lol
Actions speak louder than words. He just traded a starting goalie to run with one of the worst tandems in the league. Bahl is a decent toss in but he is a toss in.
The Flames now have a bottom 5 dcore, a bottom 5 tandem, and a bottom ten forward core. Will people only believe a rebuild is happening if Conroy comes out directly and says buckle up the Flames will suck for three years.
He is still technically holding true to his definition of not rebuilding which is trading away every vet lol.
Markstrom was my barometer for what management was actually thinking. They didn't have to trade him and they were going to get worse by doing it.
I totally agree. This is a tank level team (as it stands now). But they keep beating the playoff drum to the public, that's a fact, they've been saying it all year throughout all these changes. The summer is only starting so who knows what type of team they decide to ice in October.

Slashing salary! This is what Huberdeau gets for playing like crap. You are now our salary anchor to ensure we hit the cap floor while we rebuild around you. Play the hand you are dealt.
The real question is would you rather have next years first (lets call it 20th) or a potential lottery ticket in 2026?. If only the flames could've gotten a choice condition on the pick.
A McKenna draft lotto pick? 11 out of 10 yes.

No it's not. Conroy said this trade shows we are building a playoff competitive team.
We are going for it.
Ya I think everyone knows we are rebuilding. It is pretty crystal clear. Flames are currently 200K below the cap floor with 4 players to sign. That is not a team that is going for it. This is way more for the speculation thread but I would love to see them move out Rasmus for futures and pick up Orlov and an asset to help out Carolina. Given the incredible amount of cap room over the next two years would also love to see what Buffalo would include to avoid buying out Skinner.
As for the trade it could easily turn into the 14th overall pick and a dman who has played almost 2 complete seasons in the NHL before his 24th birthday. Not a bad piece of business by Conroy.
Bahl was the key piece of the deal for the Devils when they traded Taylor Hall to the Coyotes. He was a highly sought after prospect at the time. He has a lot of potential. Great size and mobility.
I'm curious to see how he looks under a coach and system that is more defensively oriented such as Huska. Bahl has spent his first two years playing behind offensive minded systems.

What PR damage? Do you know something none of us do?
He’s now saying given Markstrom’s nmc that he had doubts we could get a first back. I listen to the show regularly and that was not what he was saying on air for weeks now. So it’s framing the trade as if it beat his expectations.
For the record, I think the trade is fine. But more importantly, Steinberg should assess it on its merits rather than introducing some new framing that he’d not talked about before.
And again, I like him and his commentary in general.
At 30% though I am of the opinion you’re better off just retaining the whole 50% and getting an upgraded player (like Holtz) or a an additional cond. pick - 1st/2nd in 2026/2027 based on Markstrom’s performance or something.
Expecting the 10th overall for Markstrom was never realistic and it set people up for disappointment. That is an unfair barometer to measure this trade by.
Goalies rarely get good returns in trades. In a bubble, this is very good value for an inconsistent 34 (will be 35 before the end of next season) goaltender in an environment where draft picks have never been more valuable.
