The Markstrom final stages is an interesting one from Toronto's standpoint. He fits so many boxes there in many regards:
- Treliving's familiarity with him
- Toronto's needs for a win-now goaltender immediately. Woll is their guy of the future if he can be healthy, with star potential, but Markstrom would provide the stability and stature of a big body goaltender they need, night in and night out, to give Matthews the best chance at winning in his prime. Woll can take over in two years
- Toronto would be dealing with a team outside their conference
- Unlikely that Boston would deal one of their goaltenders to the Leafs
- Uncertainty around if Saros is available from Nashville
All in all just looks like there is little out there but Markstrom. Toronto should be jumping on it.

Too bad they don't have any worthwhile prospects and their draft picks and they pick 4 times in the first 5 rounds the next two years so restocking the cupboards is years away. Even with 100 million salary cap, they would have 2.63 million per player for the rest of the roster.

Its almost win/win
They lose those two or they lose with those two
Drai not signing and walking for nothing would be the best though. I doubt they have the sack to trade him even if he won't sign an extension.

The problem is Toronto won't move anything of interest to us.

Players have good friends on any team they play for and they still move when they want to go. Before the Markstrom rumours ever got started Lindholm was ready to jump ship and they are also best friends. I think this is just FS wishful thinking here.

Brad won't get off his wallet, he built a pretty good team that is about to win the cup though

Agreed. Especially since McDavid calls the shots with that organization - former agent is the president, former junior coach is now the head coach, his buddy from Junior got an insane contract that will put them further into cap hell next year, etc. So for Draisaitl to get traded, McDavid would have to approve it - which he won’t. He knows any players they bring in from the trade will not be as good on the powerplay as Draisaitl. That means fewer points for McDavid. That means McDavid = mad. That means McDavid = leave.
They are cornered by this core. One that is notoriously clicky with McDavid/Draisaitl/Nurse being separate from everyone else. They will have no choice but to give Draisaitl whatever he wants - if it’s to be the highest paid player in the league then that’s what they’ll do. If it’s to walk to free agency then that’s what they’ll do. And whatever happens with draisaitl, will happen the following year with McDavid.

Those are terrible contracts though, especially ######bomb

DeBrusk and Mangiapane both scored exactly 40 points this past season while posting generally strong underlying numbers. Would hardly say one is substantially better than the other.

Feels like if they bring Debrusk in Mangiapane is a guy that should be going out. I wonder about flipping him to Toronto for Liljegren? Flames take a shot on a former 1st rounder and Treliving gets a replacement for Bertuzzi/Domi.
With Debrusk it could truly be he wants to come to Alberta and Calgary is the team with cap space to give him a 5x5 type deal

It wouldn't be any good giving Debrusk a 6 year deal. Would you give Mangiapane 6x6 right now?

Having one Mangiapane just isn't enough. A second would be great and put us right back on track for the murky middle of the standings.

Debrusk is bigger, doesn't fall down every 5 seconds, and just had 11 points in 13 playoff games in the current playoffs
IMO Debrusk over Mangiapane

He would be a great pick up for a team with cup aspirations. We are not making the playoffs for likely 5 years minimum.
There's really no point in adding a playoff performer on a bottom 5 team in the league, on paper.

Depends on the culture you’re trying to build
Mang has good underlying stats playing with Backs, he’s a perimeter player now compared to what he was when he earned his contract

I could see the Flames targetting a stay at home top 4 D, as well as a top pick for Markstrom with retention.
Markstrom(50%) for 25' 1st(OTT) + Zub
Markstrom (50%) for 25' 1st(NJD) + Siegenthaler
The Flames always emphasized building defense first. A stay at home D would be a good Tanev replacement, and a potential partner for Andersson or Kylington(if re-signed) that lets them play a more offensive game.

Debrusk just reminds me of another Mangiapane or like a Troy Brouwer. I just don't see any fit.
We have a large collection of "meh" wingers. Why do we need more?
Debrusk moving to Calgary may have nothing to do with signing here. I will trust Conroy to do the right thing, and be patient with the rebuild. And I know, I know we will never rebuild. Yada Yada Yada.
