I think you're missing the part where I quoted diss re: keeping Markstrom. My comment had nothing to do with Debrusk, Little Miss Muffet.

They had a legal tampering period when Troy was a UFA. He was also building a house here anyways.

I would rather just give a young guy a spot in the middle six than Debrusk who will be 28 just as the season starts. I can't imagine he signs here without an overpay but who knows I guess.

I can understand bringing UFA defensemen but more wingers? Especially a guy who is looking for max term and money contract. Yeah, doesn't make sense.

You still have to have some quality NHLers if you don't want your rebuild to go like the Oilers. And you have to reach the floor. DeBrusk is a good enough player to pot some goals and not great enough to make the Flames a good team.

I think Conroy has made it clear they want players that want to be here. Probably also means someone is on the way out that needs replacing.

Oilers probably used him to release this knowing the questions are coming if/when they lose the final

Why would anyone play for the Edmonton Oilers for free?

As much as I want to see the Oilers languish with Draisatl then McDavid leaving, paying Bouchard, Nurse, McDavid and Draisatl $50 million till the 2030's means they would have to rely on cheap prospects to even have a chance. Too bad they don't have any worthwhile prospects and their draft picks and they pick 4 times in the first 5 rounds the next two years so restocking the cupboards is years away. Even with 100 million salary cap, they would have 2.63 million per player for the rest of the roster.
