Because the Oilers can't keep Drai and McDavid and stay under the cap.

Are you really going to put $30 million down between the two? two guys on the wrong side of 30, with no money for a proper defense, or proper goaltending?

If the Oilers were smart, they would absolutely be trading Drai this offseason. They won't be smart. They'll make the playoffs next year, because no one else is going to be stepping up in the division to take that away from them.

Drai will then walk to UFA. McDavid will follow to UFA the year after.

For arguments sake, put on an Oilers brain say Pissy is the 2nd best player in the NHL (next to McDavid of course).
And let's say Edmonton is the 2nd best team in the league based on the premise of this tweet.

If he goes to say Dallas, NYR, or one of the other teams that are 3-6th best, they instantly overtake Edmonton by getting the 2nd best player in the league and Edmonton losing him.
He's not going to another team and that other team remaining only as competitive as they are now.

If he signs for $13 million/year his agent should be fired as that would be less than Matthews contract which is a bridge designed to ensure that he makes more than that on his next deal in four years. Draisaitl has been considerably underpaid on his current deal and should be looking for $14-15 million as he will get that on the market.
