This is what would happen in the NHL expanded to 60 teams. The talent gets diluted.
We have so many streaming services trying to pump out content the quality takes a hit.
I did like the first two episodes but this one was a dud. But I also hate most child actors. It's not their fault but most are just not good.

You see it with the live action Disney movies. They’re trying to “correct” the cartoons. It’s gross.
But you also hit on the fundamental problem - the people who are writing these shows aren’t great writers and they don’t have great stories to tell.
And nobody on the studio side gives a #### about the stories, so nobody’s there to say “stop letting people survive lightsaber wounds.”
So it all ends up feeling hollow and wrong.
(Post script - the larger overall problem in the Star Wars universe is that there is nothing generally worth defending. There is no Shire. There is no place removed from the action for the hero to return to. Everyone is an orphan from a terrible place, and fighting is the only way for them to escape their boring/hellish existence)
|
I think you have this kind of upside down. The shows are now viewed by people of have contempt for the source material.
People have whined and complained and intimidated the studios into adapting fan fiction instead of building out new stories within these worlds. The Rise of Skywalker is the perfect example, it's not Disneys fault, it's only a little bit JJs fault, blame lays squarely at the feet of the people who have built their identity around loving Star Wars, but who clearly hate it deep down inside, and are just waiting to pounce down the throat of any misstep that lays just 1 or 2 mm out side of the expectations they built for themselves.
If you hate all of it, just start watching mindless rom-coms or something. Stop worrying about it. Like it or not it would hard to argue that Stars has put out much content better than this show in the past decade (probably Andor, Modo S1, Rebels and that's about it). So if you can't bring yourself to just enjoy it, than you may have outgrown star wars.

The thing is I don't think it's particularly hard to come up with good star wars that checks the essential boxes for fans. They're just elite at missing the mark despite having all the resources to do it.
Gilroy didn't even try to make one and he made the best or second best story in the Disney era. He just happened to get the gritty, dangerous universe part down and cut down the disney influences for a darker story and that alone worked for so many more fans.
Don't know how this is so hard for them to figure out.

The worst part of the episode for me was the squabbling between the twins. If I wanted to listen to that I'd just go to Swiss Chalet on a Saturday night.

Star Wars as a whole should be able to at least write its own story based on the bones of the era that the story takes place in
Old Republic - Constant state of War between the Jedi and the Sith.
High Republic - The height of the Jedi and their arrogance, overall the galaxy is at peace, the Sith are nowhere to be found, but are they?
PT - The fall of the Old Republic, the end of the jedi, the rise of the empire
OT - The Empire at its height, there's a rebellion, but its scattered and unsure. An Evil space wizard rules all, with his buddy a really angry hateful guy in a mask, and they are supported by billions of soldiers, but there's a flicker of hope.
ST - What the f$$k happened, the Empire collapsed, things got worse, an even more evil empire is roaming the galaxy stirring stuff up.
Ok, cool now I need some characters, let me go to a handy dandy star wars name generator
Darth Imperius 👑 – Ruling over all with an iron will.
Theron Nightstrider 🌑 – A Jedi who travels under the cover of darkness
Blaze Runner 🔥 – Always at the forefront of the skirmish.
Commandant Aresko 🔫 – Instilling discipline with just a mention of your name.
Riona Swift 🌪️ – A name that suggests speed and a deft touch.
Doug Vizsla ⚔️ – A below average Mandalorian with a famous last name.
D-O 🛴 – Small in size but big in character.
Lorrkazza Boomhowler - a reculsive wookie, who might have force visions that give him nightmares.
Marlo the Hutt
All right let Chat GPT do its thing
STAR WARS
MYSTERIES OF THE HIGH REPUBLIC
The galaxy stands at a pivotal crossroads during the High Republic era. Peace and prosperity, maintained by the noble Jedi Order, face a sinister threat that lurks in the shadows.
The nefarious Sith Lord, DARTH IMPERIUS, seeks a new apprentice to extend his dark influence across the stars. In league with COMMANDANT ARESKO, a traitor to the Republic, and the ruthless crime lord MARLO THE HUTT, their schemes threaten to plunge the galaxy into chaos.
Against this rising darkness, JEDI MASTER THERON NIGHTSTRIDER leads a brave band of heroes. Alongside him are BLAZE RUNNER, a daring smuggler with a heart of gold, and RIONA SWIFT, the galaxy's best pilot and Theron's steadfast Padawan.
Together with DOUG VIZSLA, a Mandalorian struggling to live up to his famous heritage, and his loyal droid D-0, the heroes embark on a perilous quest. Joined by LORRKAZZA BOOMHOWLER, a reclusive rookie whose mysterious visions hint at untapped potential, they must thwart Darth Imperius' plans before he can find his new apprentice.
The fate of the High Republic hangs in the balance as these unlikely allies band together to confront the shadows threatening to consume the galaxy...

Hey take that back the Ewok movies were awesome, the first one was awesome, and the second one is one of the darkest starwars kids shows ever and had Wilfred Brimley, the script had to be good for him to show up.

Which makes no sense on a limited series run unless you're seriously just devoid of ideas.
You dont have to run an episode due to Network pressures or whatever, the whole series is shot and filmed prior to release.
Its not a case of: "We need an episode this week and we gots nuthin!!"
You get to plan the whole thing in advance.

It wasn't 'filler' it was backstory fleshing out the world and background of the Osha and Mae etc.
Totally fair if it didn't work for you, but not sure filler is the right term.

Not sure if true, but what I've heard speculated, is they are basically going to do that story from 3 perspectives Mea, Osha and the 4 Jedi.
So am kind of expecting the next episode to be back in the present, but with ~50% flash backs to the same events, then the following with ~30% flash backs to that night. And we are meant to leave the story wondering, was it OK that the Jedi tried to recruit her? Did her sister actually burn the place down? Who exactly killed everyone?
I think we are going to get 3 different opinions on those questions without 100% clarity on the answers.

I stopped watching because of the abysmal acting. The director is terrible.

So..I don't get it. All the witches died by the fire? Or did Mae kill them? Osha was walking in the lower level and heard them all scream from underneath the vent? They also state they died in a fire though?
I guess in a galaxy far far away they don't have any kind of fire safety measures? A fire from a candle can light the whole place up and kill every single person inside?

I thought there was an explosion and assumed that is what killed them.

The SW universe has no OSHA equivalent. This is pretty evident right from Episode 1.

That'd be a show that I'd watch.
"Hello Mr. Emperor...I'm your local OHSA Rep. So. I've toured your 'Death Star' and I have some notes. Open pits are a concern, the blatant and almost preposterous lack of railings? Thats something we have to talk about.
Are you aware that you have an entirely open reactor core? Its just...its just right there...anything could happen! You get a torpedo in there? This place is history!
I'm not even going to get into Trash Compactor safety protocols! Thats just nonsense what you've got going on there!
And have you seen the horrific dangers of basic tractor beam maintenance? You have to climb on some tiny ledge to operate the equipment! We need to have words with your engineers.
Now. Lets talk about 'Forest Moon Installations' because it seems to us as though they have some flaws as well. You just rock an AT-AT right up to them and think thats totally fine? I saw that one with the 'Disabled Parking Pass' and I also saw that you do not have adequate Disabled Parking!

So the whole building is also filled with various explosion hazards? How do all these ancient orders and their ancient books survive for so long when all it takes is an unattended candle or cigarette to wipe them all out?

To be fair, the death star was apparently so well built that its only weakness was a single exhaust vent. That's kind of dumb and clearly a plot device.
A group of ancient and force sensitive witches being unable to deal with a fire, without a single survivor, is kind of dumb on a whole other level.
Also, why are there so many witches in Star Wars all of a sudden? I've never read the expanded materials, is that a major thing there?

Yeah they didn't go into much detail while it was happening and it's really unclear exactly what happened. Admittedly it was poorly executed.
From what I can gather on a quick rewatch was:
1) M locks O in their room and start a fire at the entrance
2) O escapes through some sort of hatch and proceeds through a tunnel
3) At the end of the tunnel she reaches some sort of reactor room?
4) M is now in the reactor room and there is an explosion (maybe she did something to cause the reactor to explode?)
5) They have some pretty poor dialog lol then they both fall but the Jedi is able catch O
6) They run into another area and there is debris lying everywhere along with all the dead witches
7) They enter another room, more debris and the dead mother
