Yes the Flames "tried" to sign these UFA's

It was a scenario where they would have either had a good player on a decent contract or an expiring asset to trade for futures.
In all cases they ended up trading the player for futures after holding firm on contract offers the player wouldn't accept.

Exactly. It is no different than kicking tires on Laine. You don't try and acquire him at any cost, but there is potential value if the deal is right for the Flames. Complaining that the Flames made offers is looking for something to complain about, IMO.

Yeah the re-signing vets is a bit of a necessity as well. The cap floor is going to 65 mil... as Calgary continues this teardown and the roster gets younger, I actually think Huberdeau's contract for example is OK here from a timing perspective. Too bad it's 3-4 years too long.
I can't wait for the Markstrom deal to be done, I've never seen another player potentially leaving involving more scoops and rumors of done deals. Before anyone jumps down my throat I enjoy reading the rumors too, just wish one would actually come to pass as it's starting to feel a bit ridiculous

Not even offering contracts to any of the UFAs (specifically when you have room) in an attempt to see if you can extend your window with that asset is just bad management.

Signing Lindholm to an 8 year deal is not good asset management. He met none of the above criteria and still it took him (thankfully) rejecting that deal to avoid another Huberdeau/Kadri situation.
Re-signing players can of course work out. Where all of those players were in their respective careers, combined with the lack of results and need to turn over this roster, I maintain that I’m confused why we were attempting to bring them back.

Agreed, it's time for this chapter to be done. As soon as possible.

After last year, really what could he command on his next contract?
|
Really? He had 31 goals and 59 points last season, if he comes anywhere near that this year he will likely be looking at $7mil AAV on a long term contract in free agency next summer, at his age.

But we can sign him this summer. I'm a huge fan, but at this point he has only had 1 big year. If we signed him 4 x 4 and he put up 4 good years, he would be a UFA around 30 and wanting 8 x 8. We probably would have to trade him by then.
If we locked him up this summer, I bet Conroy can sign him on a contract that is less than 7 and for 6-8 years. Expires at a better age. If he wants to test free agency, trade him this year and draft at the top of the draft and add more assets early in the rebuild. I don't see what 4 years would have done for this team and of course after he has a big year we can question the decision to only sign him for 2

I don't see him signing anything ths summer, it's becoming a trend that players are very difficult to sign the summer before their last contract year.
Then Conroy will be right where he was with a few players last season where you pretty much have to trade them. Honestly, I'm fine with that, personally. As another 1st rounder or whatever we get for him would be great

But if that is the case, the 2-year deal forcing his hand is the better option. If we signed him 4 x 4, we haven't show that we will trade guys with many years left on their deal other than Markstrom and he is 34 and we have Wolf.
4 x 4 really wouldn't help this team, it's not like they are trying to sustain a good team and build on it and are worried about the 2 years of elevated cap hit. I'd rather resign him long term now at 27 then waiting 2 years when he is 29, makes more sense to me.

Oh for sure, I agree that unintentionally it was probably better for the rebuild that Conroy walked him to UFA on a short deal.

Precisely, especially with how all over the place the top 20 of this draft will be.
I know I wouldn't trade a top 15 pick before seeing potential fallers, it would be nauseating to miss out on a prospect your team had high up in their rankings.

Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a snooze fest like the NFL draft, I always liked how the NHL did it but I understand it’s probably costly to fly in all those kids etc.
Probably end up being top 5-10 prospects and that’s it, everyone else waiting at home.

I for one welcome the change. I’m so sick of GMs going up and thanking the city for the hospitality. Shouting out to their fan draft party. Congratulating the cup winner. Having an entourage of 20 team executives and their kids marching up to the podium and everyone shaking Bettmans hand. It’s so bush league and glad the dog and pony show is over. If they ran it like day 2 onwards, no issue. But trades don’t get consummated on the floor like they used to. You used to be able to watch GMs on the team phones and piece it togetherr, which was part of the fun. So turn the page and make it a bit more professional.

Saves a ton of cash on transportation as well. Something something carbon footprint.
Plus we can have ppv live feeds to their war rooms or something.
