Markstrom has a $2.5 million signing bonus this season. Typically those are paid out July 1st.

Does the SB matter if eating half the salary?

Agreed. These pieces seem like a good fit. Could see something like Markstrom (50% retained) + 28th overall for 10th overall + Holtz + 3rd round pick.

Yes. Any team retaining would be responsible for the retention % of the signing bonus.

So we give him 1.25 million on July 1st and pay 1.75 in salary throughout the year ?

If 10th overall is in the package, I'm sure they don't care about the July 1st SB stuff.

Or if the trade happens after the signing bonus is paid out, then the Flames pay $2.5 million and pay $1.75 million for the rest of the season.
Which incentivizes the Flames to move him before the SB is paid out and for NJ to acquire him after the SB is paid out.

If #10 (or any other pick) this year is on the table, the trade has to be done well before July 1.
With all the smoke from various insiders, I don't see a conditional pick in '25 getting it done with retention.

It would be incredible if Conroy somehow manages to acquire 10th overall with Markstrom as the centerpiece. If he does that while keeping the 28th overall pick… that will be the best trade from a flames GM in a long time.

I don’t care when they announce it. I just want to know what picks / players are involved.

If Markstrom is traded purely for a draft pick, then this is a rebuild regardless of what adjective you want to attach to it.

Yup. That’s why I really want it to go down already. I’ll be eating crow if the 10th is coming back outside of it being a pick swap and heavy retention.

Now I want more. All the first round picks.
Markstrom (50% retained) to New Jersey for 10th overall + Palat + 42nd overall
Andersson to Buffalo for 11th overall + 43rd overall
28th overall + 41st overall + 43rd overall to Vegas for 19th overall
Would expect to get 4 players out of this list if the flames got to pick 9th, 10th, 11th and 19th: Iginla, Yakemchuk, Catton, Dickinson, Lindstrom, Helenius, Silayev, Hage and Hutson.
Dream would be Lindstrom at 9th, Iginla at 10th, Yakemchuk at 11th and Silayev at 19th IMO. Yes please.

If the deal was done after the deadline, makes me wonder if 10OA is involved or not.
Hard to understand why he’d bring that up to the media in his most recent scrum if it was already packaged in a deal.

Don’t think sylaev will go that far down but would be happy putting hage, or connely or artamanov in that spot.
Lindstrom,tij,yak,connely/hage could be a franchise changing draft. Good or bad.
Would be a small coup but i expect we land ten or one other in the top fifteen. And we pick up another second along the way.
St louis, nashville, utah all have multiple seconds and we have things they would want.
Fun to think about but not sure its practicality unless conroy is some kind of gm mutant.

The Flames defense getting even worse by trading Tanev and Hanifin explains the dropoff.
If he knows he's getting traded to New Jersey in the summer then all distractions are gone and he can just play. The guy isn't Pierre-Luc Dubois. He still cares and wants to compete.
