Yeah, the Flames have 20m and 2 primary slots to fill. They have cap space to weaponize. If taking on a cap dump like Palat yields a better return in a Markstrom deal, you do it. Palat vs. Walker Dueher isn't a battle fans should be fighting.

Guy was nearly PPG on a cup run 2 years ago, it would be a losing battle anyway. He would probably get 50 points here. Only thing wrong with him is the cap and if you are getting incentive to take it then do it.

And if he does bounce back, you retain and flip him again

On the Mangiapane vs. Palat front. The bread has gone stale in CGY and he could use a change of scenery and theres been rumors indicating he would be open to such a move.
Personally, I'd prefer they move him so I don't have to watch him blow tires 12 times a game 82 times over the course of a season. I deserve to see something different than that.

I think if the Flames are properly compensated it is exactly what they should be doing. That one website that estimates the value of taking on contracts has eating Palat’s 18 million bucks being worth a 11th overall pick. There are more than enough bad contracts out there for the Flames to eat. I would rather see what Carolina would add to rid themselves of Orlov’s contract or if the Jets would give up anything to rid themselves of Nate Schmidt before I took on the Palat contract.
Palat had 31 points last year and the year before he was on pace for 38 points. He is fast approaching the Milan Lucic stage of his career.

If they're willing to give proper value for us eating that 18mil over 3 years, why wouldn't we?
Who cares if he's continuing to regress, our competitive window will just be starting or not even open yet when that contract is done.

Palat was signed for his experience, two-way play, and playoff savvy, not with the expectation that he’ll put up big points in the regular season. There’s been not a whisper out of NJ that they’re shopping him. And he has an NMC. He isn’t going anywhere.

Why would he even waive to come to Calgary, when will he get to show his playoff savvy here? Probably never.

Palat is the Cap dump of choice amongst the Devil's base. The overall point of the conversation is the Flames can take cap back of it amplified the return in a trade. Slap any name you want on whatever money they need to move.

He had 34 points in his second last year in Edmonton.
He was on a 34 point pace in the lockout season.
When Lucic got hot he could put up similar numbers to what Palat has put up over the last two seasons. But you are right, Lucic was more of a 21-27 point guy in Calgary and not really a 31 point guy.

Yeah, no argument there as long as it’s for the right price. See the Monahan trade as an example.
Taking Palat is worth NJD sending us a 1st all be itself IMO.

The respective fanbases of NJ. Ottawa and Toronto are very shortsighted and are missing some important context when they're shutting down the idea of acquiring Markstrom.
I get it from looking at the Statline perspective acquiring him isn't "sexy". But the truth is , Markstrom sling this team on his back after his broken finger injury and inflated the teams place in the standings himself until the deadline.
That stretch of games he was legitimately one of the best goalies in the league. It's fair to say he stood on his head.
Putting Markstrom on any of those 3 teams puts them 10 points higher or more in the standings. Easily.

It's likely the only way he waives to very temporarily come to Calgary is if the Flames retain on him and flip him right away to somewhere like TB at $3m a year (maybe NJ retains too to get 4.5m off their books).
TB and NJ could both be interested in a deal like this and both could offer up something decent to the Flames, NJ for clearing the cap and TB for Palat who was pretty good there and probably has a number of buddies. Gonna be tough to make a deal with Tampa work with their salary cap issues, but it could be part of a bigger deal.

They also watched him get blown up in his last playoff series and have a really bad follow up year.
If I was a fan of their teams I'd be fine with a late/protected 1st. No way would I give up a top ten pick for him.

Has anyone else paid what Treliving paid to take on salary? I think people are trying to benchmark that trade to justify NJ or Ottawa sending us more.
There is a good chance the market rate is considerably less, and expectations should be reigned in.
