You find the kindest way to tell them off that isn't provocative or escalating but is firm, and have the body language to match, instead of going into a fawn state. A mindful partner should be able to step into that space when it's called for. Otherwise they'll feel like the most unsafe person to be with if an actually dangerous situation arises... cause they'll just slump and duck away even if violated and leave you to your own devices.
I doubt it was a misunderstanding on Groot’s part, because this is still a really weird and out of touch take.

I know you like to go on these little diatribes about society and how men and women ought to be an everything but maybe scale it back big guy. I’ve never met a woman who liked being told what she needed and how she felt, especially by men that don’t know their situation and don’t know women in general.

McDavid handled it fine. Get on with your day, avoiding turning it into anything, move on. It’s not like she was in danger or needed “protecting” (lol) at any point.

jesus. just say something like 'the rivervalley in the spring'. How hard is that?

Or if you want to lie, say "the people".

Come on now, there is telling a lie then there is saying you like the people of Edmonton. Even his cardboard personality couldn't have kept a straight face.

I think you are wrong.

I think you need to Alpha the situation in a positive manner.

I can't help but think McDavid really does need interpersonal skills coaching.

Dude could have made that a 20 secs viral sensation with using some of their manpower and a few high fives.

He should have stayed and cracked open the beers with them. Certainly would have been a better partner move than subjecting his fiance to spending more time with those Oilers players.

I don’t think any amount of coaching could fix how much he hates Edmonton.

That's a risky choice in Edmonton if you intend to actually consume said beer.

He couldn't even lie and say the fans? The people? Blue collar, down to earth spirit or something?

Unreal. He couldn't even make up something to appease the intermarried cousins up there.

Yeah, McDavid did not handle the crazy fan situation anywhere close to right. There are numerous other scenarios that would have played out better and in fact worked in his favour like someone previously mentioned.

Behaving like a detached, soulless mutant with zero personality is not the way to go. The guy sucks.

McDavid clearly wants to get out of that town. There is no way he's signing there, thats why he is detached.

He truly doesnt care how he comes off at this point.

Also, no reason to try and make him seem like a bad guy after the fan incident. Those dudes were grossly inappropriate, trying to hug him in his drivers door, sitting in the back of his car.

I wouldn't have made light of the situation either.

Strongly disagree. McDavid is just trying to enjoy his personal life out of the spotlight for once and the fans did not give him any space to even breathe. It’s no secret he wants out of Edmonton, and when you have fans that act like that and obsess over him it would get extremely tiring.

I understand the arguments for a positive/friendly response also. Appeasing them by mirroring would probably be effective in this case. Evidently their goal was getting his attention.

But they went too far trying to get it, and when people do that they no longer qualify for an easy-going response. You can start by acknowledging their team spirit, but then making your boundary be known. Feels like common sense.

Basically any response other than what he did would be at the very least better. Just don't be a mound of gelatin.

The whole interaction seems to have worked perfectly according to the No-Goodery Paradox. When an unstoppable dullard No Good (McJesus) carrying a No Good consumable (Lite beer) meets and unyielding No Good you get a No Good cluster####!

He could practice his newfound skills on people he doesn't already know, like the Oilers' 3rd and 4th lines.
