I don't see how Pick #10 at this draft helps NJD more than Markstrom does over the next 2 years. Pretty simple assessment imo.
NJ already screwed up by not trading for Markstrom earlier last year. I think they would have made the playoffs.

What's obvious to me is that like most UFAs that age, Schneider wasn't going to sign for anything less than a retirement contract. His salary wasn't too high, but everyone knew going in that the term was too long.

I doubt that very much. They were garbage down the stretch, hard to win games when you are scoring one or two goals.

I don't think you can look at it as just the next two years.
Hughes is 23 and signed for 6 more years until he's 29.
So that's pretty much their current window that they'd be aiming for.
Does 10oth oa or Markstrom have more impact over the course of the 6 years?
Hard to say but I don't think it's as simple as you made it.

Markstrom needs to go. Getting 10th overall for him would be robbery. He's already made it clear he's not happy with management, so there's no need to keep a sulky player around.

A 10 OA pick is atleast 2-3 years from making the show. Their position of need is goaltending. I mean if they're going to pick a goalie at that point, it's a valid argument. A top NHL goaltender is going to push the envelope a lot further than another forward or dman 3 years from now. Keep in mind Devils are loaded at forward and defence already. Law of large numbers. Any further player at those positions would be incremental improvement at best.

Say what you will, but Markstrom will not give up because of a trade that didn't happen. He is a competitor. He wants to win. He can see that this timeline of the team that he had chose to sign with is going to struggle and he's not getting any younger. There is nothing wrong with that. Calgary is going to turn an asset into something and thats good news.
There are alot of things I don't like on this team but some of you guys twist every part into some kind of fiasco that really isn't there. Maybe go follow Spector and ride his bull#### for awhile.

When Edmonton #####s the bed with Skinner/Pickard, what's your ransom demand for Marky to wear the Blue and Gold next season?

Losing in the Cup final is hardly ####ing the bed.
Every poster on CP wishes the Flames would have the playoffs the Oilers have had the past few years. But hey, at least it hasn't interfered with the start of golf season!!!

It's amazing the hoops the doom and gloom crowd will jump though to try and argue the value of what reputable insiders give a player just because he plays for the Flames and that's their thing. The Devils don't have any option other than Markstrom here. Saros isn't moving and on the off chance he does a 1st and Mercer + are going the other way, I would put money on that. There is no chance the Bruins are going to trade Ullmark to NJ imo, everything I have heard is that's not happening. Conroy holds all the cards here in a deal, if NJ offers a 2025 protected pick and a B prospect Conroy hangs up because he doesn't have to move Jacob Markstrom. Either pay the price or have fun with Jake Allen.

Agreed. If any tender moves and nj isnt in on it the pressure only goes up.

If I had a wish it would be for the Flames to win the cup...not almost win or lose in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Sometimes I wonder about you. The Oilers were also a Demko/Boeser being healthy away from losing in round 2 again. Drai contract upcoming. They better hope they can win it because this might be it despite FOUR lottery wins and 15 years of being the worst team in league history over a 15 year stretch.
If they don't win the cup they MIGHT have one more shot, you bet your ass they will be desperate for a bonafine goalie. Montreal lost a cup final recently, do we dream of their playoffs too?

I just hope this saga ####ing ends at some point. It’s getting a little ridiculous. Has there ever been a player so widely speculated to be traded for such a long period of time and then nothing happens?
No wonder he’s annoyed. I’m annoyed and I’m not even involved in any way shape or form. Something tells me NJ is a huge ####ing pain to deal with.

Markstrom holds all the cards not conroy . Sec said at end of season he requested a trade. I guess conroy could keep him but does he really want that distraction in the locker room next year?

Yeah, with Friedman's report today saying there are things happening, but Calgary wants to keep it very quiet to avoid the chaos of what happened in the season I think it's probably safe to bet that Markstrom is getting traded (and could have requested a trade). So, he goes to whoever offers the best value from a team that Markstrom approves a trade to.
The fun part is that Ottawa, New Jersey, and Toronto are apparently three teams involved that we know of. Ottawa holds 7th OA, and New Jersey holds 10th OA. I don't expect Conroy will be able to shake one of those two picks free - I just don't see the precedent for a player like Markstrom returning something that significant - but if he does? That's a grand slam.
If you can pull an "A" asset out of a 34 year old goalie, it's a big win. Markstrom + 28th for 10th? That's a huge win in my eyes.

Which insider straight up said that Markstrom was worth the 10th overall pick? Because all the speculation I heard from places like Barn Burner, Seravalli, and the fan seemed to argue that you would need to add to Markstrom to get that pick.
Last year Noodles was arguing that Markstrom at $3M x 3 is going to bring back a haul, but we burned a year, so the price decreases. If we wait another year then it decreases further. If Markstrom has a mediocre year, then he'll have even less suitors, etc.

The Devils may well trade for Markstrom (2025 1st ++), while dealing the 10OA elsewhere for help up front. The loss of Macleod left a big hole, and the Devils seem to think Mercer is best suited to the wing.
