Default Capfriendly sold, has gone offline. RIP CapFriendly.

It won’t happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website.

These same sources stressed that both the Capitals and CapFriendly wanted the site to be publicly available and independently operated through the 2024 NHL Draft and the start of free agency, so it is not expected the sale will be official until at least July 5.

You can definitely see why a team would want this infrastructure. After the transaction officially closes, the website will go dark.

I don't get this purchase.

Someone will come and recreate the exact same or better product. Relationships to source contract information won't be easy, but not insurmountable.

It's a pretty well designed product.

There will still be sites to view team caps, but I doubt they will be as well put together and have as much functionality.

Absolutely brutal. Corporate purging of third party API usage is just another in a long line of the big guys kicking the consumer in the nuts.

That sucks. Hopefully another site will replace it as I would think all the data is public.

I did, and the question remains the same. Why is a team able to do that and only screw over the consumer base that uses it? The Caps are acting like this is going to help them get the upper leg when I feel like all nhl clubs have something similar to this, if not then have the legitimate resources to not have to depend on capfriendly.

It's public in the sense that it's out there.

But you have to design databases, gather the data and feed it into there.

Hopefully quickly, before Washington can but copyrights in place.
Then their purchase goes through anyway and they've essentially wasted their money for no competitive advantage.

I think most NHL clubs don't have a system like this since capfriendly was available.

A system as fleshed out as this would cost 100s of thousands to create.

Understood that the value is in the software and data management program that is the basis of Capfriendly, but if CapGeek managed to have a similar system, I would hope someone else could as well.

Not sure it would be worth it, as I have no idea what revenue a site like that can generate.

Edit: Or the NHL creates a fan friendly page that has this info. They must have it.

My guess is the Caps are making this purchase less to get the website infrastructure and more to make sure the guys who built an extremely intricate LTIR tool are the ones helping to manage their own cap and maximize their LTIR ceiling. All the extra data is just a bonus.

The NHL can’t even make NHL.com fan friendly for looking up scores, that website is horrible and it rhymes with smooshmortion.
