Markstrom's GSAA this year was top 10 in league which slipped from a much higher level pre-NJ trade noise in early March. His quality starts stopped almost completely after those rumors.

What are comparable trades of a starting goalie?

About the best you can hope for in a return for your starter, it seems, is a mid-to-high first round pick. A return like that could be great, or terrible. At the end of the day, it's an unknown commodity when you acquire it.

A 29th 1st round pick (retention value) and 17th 1st round pick = 10th overall
per Source: https://puckpedia.com/pickvalue

Is Markstrom's unretained value a 17th overall equivalent?

Source: https://www.espn.com/nhl/insider/sto...best-2023-2024 (Feb 15, 2024 before trade deadline).

I posted a thread with a similar concept on Twitter / X tonight.

https://x.com/hellahotsauce/status/1...336882909?s=46

Really based on pick values both Markstrom (50%) for 10 or Markstrom (50%) + 41 for 10 should be close to enough value.

It shouldn't take Markstrom + 28 to get 10

Sorry my idea was with 0 retention, I should have been more clear!

Hopefully they retain to maximize value.

If they can get 10 OA without giving up 28 OA that's even better.

We shouldn’t be adding a thing if we retain 50%.

Someone needs to ask Fitz if his owner would accept a 3rd rounder while paying 6 million in real money for someone to play for another team.

The guy has lost his mind.

Maybe I'm jaded, but Markstrom is turning 35 in January and is a good, but not amazing goalie. I'd love to get that 10th OA pick, but there has to be more involved, maybe a lot more. Even with retention there's gotta be something very decent given up to get a pick that good.

Yes won’t happen but that would make this cup run much easier to swallow as a Flames fan. C’mon Conroy, give us fans something to put our head up high for!
If you can get either Mercer or the 10OA, you take it and run.

Pierre says the Devils also want some grit. Pospisil move the needle any?

No details but was just told “keep an eye on Ottawa” when I asked about this.

A top 10 pick, even if it is #10, seems like a huge overpayment for Markstrom to me, salary retention or not. I would love to see it happen, but I am not getting my hopes up. If or when Markstrom is traded, I predict a lot of negative flipping out on here based on what the expectations seem to be from fans.

I could see the Sens doing

Markstrom (2 million retained ) for 7th and Korpisalo. I would be shocked if Korpisalo is still on the Sens next year.

Here come 700 pages of discussion and then Markstrom is at training camp in September.

Yeah, this is another case where fan expectations have gotten so high that there’s gonna be a lot of people flipping out when they see the actual return.

When Fitzgerald talked about moving the 10 OA pick he said he’d move it if he could get an asset of the right age - 23 to 25 - back. Which is understandable. Dealing a pick that high for a 34 year old is almost guaranteed to look like a bad trade when the dust settles.

I expect Markstrom would bring back the Devil’s 2025 1st + something extra with retention. Maybe Holtz or Casey.

If the Devils deal the #10 OA it will be for a youngish C.

Ottawa would be drunk if they did this.

A top 10 draft pick or pay Markstrom 2x$6M. Hmm…I know which one I’d choose.

They hired Travis Green. Clearly they've been drinking a little already.

Oof.

Markstrom for 10 is not happening
Markstrom for 10 + Mercer is definitely not happening

Markstrom retained plus VAN's first to move up to 10th might be in the ballpark but it could still require more to push a deal through.

If that NJ troll was right about one thing it's that a 34 year old goalie does carry some risk for the receiving team and value should be adjusted accordingly.

I think we all overshot on the perceptual value of markstrom based on his most recent play at the time. He sat out multiple times for maintenance last year, and the player isn't getting any younger.

Let's adjust our expectations now.

I’d do Markstrom no retention for a 3rd and Holtz.

It’s what a Smith got from us.

He’s 34 and starting to break down.

But the G market is VERY thin this summer....and the whole supply and demand equation changes things.

Conroy holds the cards in this one...no one else.

IF NSH truly is not willing to deal Saros ad has been reported, then its even thinner.

NJD are NOT heading into next year with Jake Allen as #1....or Fitzgerald will lose his job. There are no 23-25 YO G's that move the needle AND are available.

I can see him moving #10 as long as that late 1st goes back so he can still sell the "1st rd pick" part of things.

I'd do Markstrom 50% retained + 28th oa for 10th oa in a heartbeat.

Bahl would be a nice little sweetener
