If the Flames want to get creative how about, Anderson for Linus Ullmark. Then we can ship him off to Buffalo in a three way. And Markstrom to New Jersey. That would give us a potential 2 firsts.

For one, its Buffalo.
Two. Well, its Buffalo.
Seriously though, he agreed to go to the Devils, basically be living in NYC. Upstate NY would be a different story and I'm betting he'd be less willing to go there.
There are also (allegedly) other teams in the mix, some of whom are probably in a similar position to Buffalo in even slightly more desirable locations.
So yeah he could go to Buffalo, but I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest he'd say no thanks.

Well TBF he had friends / ex teammates on this team. Honestly uncertain if that would be the case in Buffalo. It was also a very small move for his family (I assume).

Yeah… these elements are impossible to predict. As a hockey fan, I look through a hockey lens. They need a starter and not much else, Markstrom has never won a cup. Makes sense to me from a career perspective. Guessing what his family wants isn’t something I waste time thinking about. If he doesn’t waive for them, then he doesn’t. But as a goalie who’s always wanted to win a cup myself, that would be up there as a destination I’d want to go currently (due to pieces, and needs). Although NJ would be my preference of the two, both would be my preference over the Flames for the next two years.

Give the Sabres whatever er they want for their pick, markstrom for the devils pick and see if Ottawa wants to trade theirs too!
Flames have 9th
Seriously, markstrom gets you 10th
Anderson and one of mangipane or Kuzmenko or whoever else, gets you 11th
Dangle Weegar to the sens for 7
Not all of those trades can happen but imagine have 3 picks in the top 15!

The issue is everyone in the NHL has a no trade clause, and I am confident that Ullmark has Calgary and Buffalo on his.

Retain 25% on Marky and you have a deal.
Schmid needs a change of scenery, Daws established himself as the clear #3 in the system and will benefit from another season in Utica.
Flames can have their choice of Clarke/Holtz.

I suspect if one swapped out Holtz for Schmid on that deal there could well be a deal.
Markstrom (25%) + 28 + 2026 3rd for 10 + Clarke + Holtz

Cool tool released by puckpedia.
Expected draft pick compensation to take on cap hits based on historical trades.

No, it’s not measuring the value of the players, it’s measuring the value of the salary cap retention. The function of choosing a player is just to get their contract in the calculation.

I think the player option they added is irrelevant. What is important is the dollar amount. Adding the player just allows you to load the contract and then you have to manually adjust it based on the percentage retained.

I think the player value matters. If you are retaining $3 million on a $6 million player who only produces like a $3 million player, it's a lot less value than retaining in the same situation where the player still provides $6 million in production.
In the latter case, it is certainly a better bargain for the team acquiring the player, and therefore they should be paying more for that retention.
