Yeah I think you need to take advantage of a top 10 pick becoming publicly available when you have what they're seeking.
These opportunities are what help to fast track replenishing your talent base.

Helenius over Catton, I agree with that for sure.
Helenius has proven he can produce against Men. Big question for Catton.
But Tij over both if he's there.

This rebuild could be how a dynasty is built. There is so much to be excited about, just missing the top guys.
Reminds me of Chicago, they had tons of pieces and just when they started to have a good young core, they got Toews and Kane and won 3 cups.
I can't wait to see Conroy's next move. Things get said in the media all the time but might not be true. His next few moves will tell us a lot.

Still have dreams of markstrom basis for ten. Anderson basis for 11.
Take who is left of buium, dickinson, sylaev.
Yakemchuk.
Whos left of catton , lindstrom, iginla.
Come out with buium, yak, catton, then elick or Bedouin at 28.
Profit.

Imagine if CGY got the 10th overall and Lindstrom slid to them, now you have the opportunity to snag Lindstrom and Yakemchuk. That's one hell of a duo to draft for a rebuilding team. Size, Snarl, skill and speed.

For me, if they get 10th OA and keep 9th OA I would hope to get one of the Dmen and one of the forwards.
One of Parekh or Buium
One of Catton, Lindstrom or Iginla
That'd be a great boost to the prospect pool

That would be amazing, not high on Lindstrom at all.

Brz, a 24 defenseman, and a 24 center would be like coming out this year with three top 15 picks.

I am getting schadenfreude from seeing Marner publicly spiting the Leafs. He doesn't want to be traded. He has a NMC so he can block that. He doesn't want to re-sign. He just wants to remain a Leaf this year and will just hit UFA.
Source: twitter's algo is forcing leafs content on me the past few days and the Marner camp statements have their fanbase panicking

Brad gets to walk another player to free agency lol. Although he is way less to blame if that happens on this one

Could really backfire for Marner if he doesn't have a strong season.

It's funny...because for all the "We should have given Tkachuk 6 years" arguments...this was the alternative.
Like Marner a 6 year contract would have for sure had a NMC for years 5 and 6 (the UFA years) and would have allowed him to just go "You can't move me and I'm walking myself to free agency"
Where the 3 year deal allowed the Flames to have no trade protection on him, have a lower cap hit, and still have him as an RFA at the end of that contract with the ability to re-sign him, or work with him to move him to his preferred destination.
It didn't work out for the Flames...but I still prefer that contract vs the potential where he could just walk himself to UFA with the team unable to trade him like Marner is able to do now.

IDK it seems like a negotiation tactic...the chances of Marner playing the entire season with the Leafs and then walking are VERY low

they got Kane and Toews 1st and 3rd overall, and the Flames refuse to be bad enough to accomplish that

I think they will get there personally. look at the roster now. consider who they are looking to trade, (Markstrom, Mangiapane) they are still bottoming out.

That's still the risk though.
Marner can say give me $12.5M or I walk for nothing...makes it really tough for the Leafs.

For this to pan out as well as it did for Chicago we need to land a couple of Hagens, McKenna, or TBD top pick in 2027.
And/or find a way to get some more top 5 picks beyond our own in these drafts.
It's of course not impossible, but improbable to say the least.

If Marner wants to play hardball, I guess Leafs can bench him till he agrees to a trade. That's probably their only leverage.

Marner just had 85 in 69 games. In an “off” year.
He could sit out the entire season and he’d get north of $12M.
