I faced this descision a month ago and ended up choosing the 360. Truth be told, I made the right call.

Hook that sucker up to your internal network and you have a fully functioning media entertainment system You can stream music, pictures, video easily from any Windows box and it doubles as a pretty good DVD player (well for me at least). In addition, xbox live is still years ahead of the sony offering.

The only thing you will really be missing on the PS3 is the japanese RPG games.

And if you arn't decided yet, go play a demo of Crackdown. Hands down the coolest game ever made.

The unreliableness came from the initial model of the Xbox360 (Core system I think?). Most of the issues have been ironed out with the release of the premium and elite versions.

I've left my 360 running for over 8 hours and felt it's case and power converter. I was surprised at how cool it actually was, considering the reputation the system has.

I hated Crackdown. The sole point seems to be how many illegal immigrants you can hunt down and slaughter.

Graphics kind of sucked too. Seriously, Gears of War is the current example of how amazing the 360 can be.

Find which system has the games you like to play. Don't pick one because it is "better" than the other. List the games you have enjoyed, then see which system has the most of those types of games.

My Xbox just crapped out after 9 months. Fortunately, they extended the warranty to a full year. I just recieved my return box and shipped it away today.

Speaking of which, is it possible to extend my warranty at this stage?

Well, to each his own. Never saw Crackdown in that light... but that's a good point actually.

Haven't tried GoW yet, but I hear it's decent. Are there any other games for the system that would be recommended? I've played 3 so far: Call of Duty 3, Crackdown and Forza 2.

Ultimately, you have to go with the system that suites you for games. Unless, like me, the Blu-Ray player gets used more than the gaming aspect of the PS3. I only have time for a few hours of gaming here and there - but love watching movies and so does my wife.

If the PS3 has enough games now, and in the very near future, to keep you satisfied until more games come along, go with it.

If you need the large title selection of the 360, go with it (and an extended warranty).

PS3 is easily the better system, but has absolutely no games really worth playing at this point.

Since I never bought a PS2, I've had a lot more fun just buying PS2 games and playing those instead. PS3 releases are very very weak so far.

I'm just waiting for more games to hit the PS3 before buying one. Right now I'm still in no hurry, so hopefully by the time I actually decide to pick one up, there will be a price drop for the system. I still have my Wii, but it's not getting as much play as it used to when I first got it. I dunno, the wiimote is a great concept and all, but sometimes I just feel like playing video games normally, just pressing buttons on a controller rather than needing to swing it around.

If you like FPS (especially) and racing games, go with the 360. If adventure, RPG's and platformers are more up your alley, I'd go with the PS3.

On the same note, the PS3 is currently NOT worth the $600+ pricetag.

Unless you choose to steal one. In which case, you had better beware the wrath of a wily teenager wielding a samurai sword.

Wait till e3 in July. Full game lineups will be announced for both systems and maybe even some price cuts.

i'm too cheap/poor to buy one, but i have a buddy who's on his third 360 (the first two crapped out in a matter of a few months). but he did some serious gaming...bigtime hours on that thing.

Speaking as someone who works in a game store, I wouldn't get either. There's not enough games to justify the PS3 right now, and the 360 is a piece of junk that you'll end up replacing over and over again because Microsoft's too stubborn to fix the bloody problems.

Well there is word that Microsoft has recently been putting a revised heatsink into any 360's that were sent in to be fixed. There are pictures of the new heatsink on the net. I'd still wait till the die shrink to 65 nm if you don't have one yet. It should be here in a few months hopefully. I'm still holding out.

As far as I know, 360s now are pretty good, it's the old ones that crapped out. I bought one about a month ago and it's great. Too early to know if it will crap out, but they do give an automatic 1 year warrenty now to try and get past the bad rep they've got.

as far as the hardrive versions go, there's 3 choices. The core has no hardrive so you'll have to buy memory cards which is a waste of money IMO. The next up one has a 20gig I believe and the new elite has 100 gig and hdmi.
I bought the elite because it's only $50 more then the other hardrive model and the 100gigs may be useful down the road. The hdmi is nice too if you have/will get an hdmi tv.

Sid Meier is behind the PS3. He is my favorite game designer/developer of all time. If I was having a tough time choosing, his support might push me over the edge.

http://www.us.playstation.com/News/Editorials/53

And, as I-Hate-Hulse posted in another thread, Blockbuster will soon Blu-Ray exclusivels as opposed to HD-DVD as well.

Quote:
In the high-definition DVD war between Blu-ray and HD DVD, Blu-ray is pulling ahead. On Monday, Blockbuster announced that its next batch of high definition DVDs will be exclusively offered in the Blu-ray format.

That, would definately seal the deal for me. I probably rent a Blu-Ray from Blockbuster every two weeks.

I bought a PS3 for the hell of it a few weeks ago. That MLB: The Show is probably the best sports game i've ever played. The other games i've played have been ok, but nothing special. What i've been really impressed with is the Blu-Ray DVDs. I bought a 42" LCD with 1080p a few months ago and I'm finally getting to use it to it's full potential...and it's ing incredible.

Heh, we're zero for 4 in our office with 360's, everyone's has died, one of them was purchased a year after launch.

I'd love to know the real failure rate.

Should be able to, a friend just extended the warranty on his and he got it in Nov last year.

The PS3's are great pieces of engineering, the heat sink and fan and stuff they use are impressive (just look at one being taken apart). And they should be considering they cost over $800 to make each. And MS should have included wireless, bigger HDD, etc..

As others have said, at this moment there's no comparison; the 360 has a much better game selection, while the PS3 is more integrated and has Blu-ray. Down the road the game selection should improve for the PS3 though, and exclusives for each console always impact the decision.
