Maybe at the deadline if the Devils got 2 potential playoff runs out of him, I could see an overpayment. But Markstrom is an aging goalie who has 1 year left on his contract.
Add in that there will be some other goalies of the same caliber available who are much younger, and I just don't see it.

He has two years left.

I don't think Markstrom or Andersson get top 10 picks but I'd love to see it happen. Even if you have to add I think it's well worth it. Getting young elite talent is extremely difficult and your best chance is top 10 in the draft. If it takes Markstrom and another piece so be it. Same goes for Andersson.

I honestly think Markstrom's best case scenario for a return is a late round 1st.
The rumor of the 1st + Mercer + more was a pipe dream. Maybe that is what Conroy wanted, but goalies rarely return anything near that amount. Especially aging goalies.

Seems like he simply wont part with Mercer, so Conny says #10 or no deal.

People need to move on. Markstrom at full ticket probably returns a second rounder. With retention may add a B level prospect to that. The high return on Markstrom ship sailed at the deadline.

I doubt there was ever an high return for Markstrom, however the Flames lost leverage when he was not moved at the deadline.
I still think he will be traded, likely an late first rounder and a mid-tier prospect
Without retention.

So basically the offer that NJ had at the deadline, which was a 2025 protected first and Holtz.

Sorry but how is Holtz a mid tier prospect?
If the Flames acquired Holtz, outside of Wolf he might be their 2nd best prospect...

Holtz is already 22. He's used up a lot of his runway. He's promising, but the odds are better he'll be another Sharangovich than a true star.

Because where he ranks in the Flames system is irrelevant. A top-tier prospect projects to be a 1st line or high-end 2nd line player. A mid-tier prospect projects to be a middle 6 player. Holtz with 28 points in 82 games and the GM calling out his work ethic and play away from the puck, is likely a middle 6 player at best.

Are there any starting goalies who have been traded for less than a 1st round pick?

I think Markstrom stays a Flame next year because the offers are gonna be so low it's gonna be insulting.
Ullmark being made available will ruin the market for Markstrom imo.

Sure, still a top 6 forward (i.e. Sharangovich). That's a good thing
Mid Tier prospect is more like a b level. (i.e. fringe type of NHLer)

Sure, Flames are never going to get an "high end" prospect (blue chipper)
In my opinion,

After being misused, how old was Bennett when he was traded?
FWIW, I would have traded Markstrom this TDL for "a Sherangovich" straight up.

All seriousness I believe he was 25 when traded to Florida

Yeah Conroy messed up big time if there was a big offer on the table
I think if they can get anything valuable for him it has to be before the season started
I doubt any Flames goalie is going to have a good year

Everyone thinks they are going to draft a star with a top 10 pick
You have to get it before it became top 10
