I spent most of the 90's to mid 2000's driving kids from the jail to the New West Greyhound depot to send them back to whichever eastern province they came from, buy them about 20 dollars worth of cheetos 'n pop to feed them for the 3 or 4 day ride back to Ontario, one Christmas I get a call from a kid I put on the bus on the 22nd, they hit a blizzard in Manitoba half way to Kenora and he was living in the depot, had run out of food and didnt know what to do! usually they just got off at Abbotsford and stole a car to get back to Vancouver

You should let Locke and others share their stories about degenerate alkies taking the bus, rather than acting like one yourself. Their stories are a lot more entertaining.

Maybe the two of you should take a Greyhound trip together to work out this tension

Or better, get jobs working together at the Hound. Feels like the right dynamic. Needs to be customer facing though.

Question - did anyone ever use those little black and white TV's in the moulded plastic seats? I remember them as a kid, but never saw them in actual use.

To the best of my recollection I cannot remember any of them ever actually working.

I've seen people angry that it ate their change, but thats the extent of it.

Alright. Remember, I wasn't there for the actual event so this is all second hand albeit from the Driver who was there.

One day a Bus hit a person on the Highway.

The prevailing theory was that it was suicide, but as you can imagine a human vs. Greyhound Bus @110km/hr? You can visualize the result and as such questions cant really be asked of the victim.

So the Driver gets back and the Union Head goes up to him immediately (because he'd obviously called it in) because they have to get the Driver's statement for the Inquiry, and he asks the Driver:

What happened? What did it look like.

Now. Thats...'what did it look like' was a dangerous question to ask this guy, who, was in my unprofessional medical opinion, a little...'not all there.'

So..."what did it look like?"

The Driver stands on one foot, throws his other leg out wide, spreads his arms out as far as he can, opens his eyes as wide as possible and sticks his tongue out.

"That. That is what it looked like."

Apparently that is what a man looks like pasted to your Bus windshield at Highway speeds.

Unfortunately Locke’s tenure there set the wheels in motion for the company’s demise in western Canada, and though I can’t speak for timun I can say with certainty that using red arrow as an alternative would be far too classy for me. So I guess we’ll just have to resort to hugging it out.

I think the definition of 'Hell' is a Greyhound Bus Bathroom after being used by someone who has just crushed half a bucket of KFC.

I'm trying to enjoy the ride, but some guy brought his bucket of KFC into the thread.

Let’s be real here, the people who complain about someone bringing a bucket of KFC on a bus or anywhere else for that matter are really just angry at themselves for not planning ahead and picking one up too.

Bus passengers complaining about the movies. I think they had A River Runs Through It for about a year.

I also ran the south parcel depot in Calgary on Manitou Road. I met my wife there, actually. We always hated dealing with the main depot because of their incompetence. We loved getting parcels from there that had clearly been run over by a forklift. Or covered in diesel. Nice work.

Did anything ever come up with that guy who beheaded a passenger on a greyhound years ago after he was released? Or did he just sort of disappear?

Oh you worked at that one? My first office was just across the Avenue on Manilla Road.

But as for the Hound, man...we had to load and unload the Courier Vans and that was a trip.

Greyhound bought this vastly complicated machine of rollers and conveyor belts so that the Courier Drivers could just back in, we Lane guys could unload the freight onto the conveyor, it would then be moved to an area where other Lane guys could sort it and then be moved to the lane where it would be loaded on a Bus.

Sounds great? Right? Nice and complicated.

That POS never worked. The Boss always bragged about how it cost $1 million dollars or some BS like that, but that POS never worked.

We dubbed it 'The Bottle Depot Reject.'

So the Lane guys, if there wasn't a bus to unload or they didnt have a trip for a bit, spent chunks of their shifts unloading and sorting all of the freight from the Courier guys...

But we had to Hand-Bomb all of it. It was just sheer labour. Everything was done by hand. And it sucked!

And those Courier guys? They...I will say that they were an interesting crowd. Largely nice guys...grumpy as all hell...but we always saw them at the end of the day.

But they only had to move this crap from Point A to their Van.

I have to unload the van onto the useless conveyor. Sort the freight onto skids. Hope the 'Forkie-of-the-day' knows what he's doing and have it brought to my Lane...or...we had wheelie-freight racks which I then have to push the damned thing to my lane, then I've got haul all that crap off again and 'Tetris it' into my goddamned Bus hoping some ass clown isn't moving to Olds or Leduc or something and has a million pieces of luggage and I'll have to haul stuff off the Bus to accommodate it all.

That happens more often than you think. Greyhound being used as a pseudo moving company or a kid going to school somewhere and his clearly loveless Parents just throwing his ass on the Hound but he's got like 5 bags of stuff.

Thats the thing...as Loaders, we dont know how much Freight or Luggage we have to deal with until it shows up. There was no planning system or anything, we just..."Here it is! Deal with it!"

I'm no specialist in trauma or anything but I hear you there. That must have been Traumatic as all Hell. I cant imagine it either.

Like...I use dark humour to just sort of block it out of my mind, such as laughing at the fact that I knew Greyhound's Media/PR guy and their slogan at the time was:

"Where are you Headed?"

I mean...posted in every Bus station.

That media guy...he was just devastated. What do you want me to say? You can't foresee a beheading? Its just...I got nuthin.

But to try and think about being one of the people on that Bus?? That must have been a horrific experience.
