I always get the insurance, I just mentally factor it into the cost of renting a car. Had a couple instances where I've used it, fender benders in parking-lots kind of things. Call up the number on the form, tell them what happened, drive away.

Yeah, that's how I would want things to go down. I don't need to start looping in my Calgary insurance company for some Dodge Dart I fked up in Hawaii. "We have no record of you owning a Dodge Dart...DENIED!!"

I usually don't but sometimes I do depending on the risk scenario for the rental. Driving mostly highway to a small town for a weekend where the car is parked and limited travel during the day? Low risk of anything happening! Renting a car while in a large, congested city you don't know and the cost is really negligible like $50-80 or whatever? Then sure. You may have duplicate coverages but sometimes the headaches involved with dealing with credit card insurance are a nightmare. I have dealt with credit card insurance for 100% easily confirmed travel claims and it's enough to drive someone mad, let alone a car accident claim.

No, I have coverage through my regular car insurance. I just tell them no and I've never been hassled. I've only ever rented in Canada or Maui. Most other places, I don't want to bother with a rental car.

the idea of you in a vehicle like that is kinda mind boggling. Maybe it reminds you of a rascal?
I get nicer and larger vehicles when I travel. I've cheaped out enough in the past that I know for sure I'm not getting the cheapest tiniest thing that red lines doing 30 kmph off the line because my foot is slightly heavy. I get mid size to vans now.
But then again, maybe that's why you pay for insurance. It's cheap AF vs what I'm renting.
I've also never had an incident in a rental vehicle except for once... I found fire arms in the trunk and the rental company was annoyed at first, but then comped everything after verifying there were indeed firearms in the trunk.

I think the key is understanding exactly what coverage you makes the decision to decline easy. If you have the SEF 27 then you are covered except for your deductible. This covers you for losses to your vehicle and third party liability And then your credit card which is the same as the LDW from the dealership.
Once you can speak confidently to how you are covered and you understand where you are covered you are able to answer any of the sales pitch questions with a firm No.
The companies make money off the lack of understanding of the minimum required insurance required to be carried by the rental agency which varies on location, your personal insurance and what credit card insurance does.

Why would you expect that from your current insurance company. If you don’t think you would be insured by your insurance company you shouldn’t be with your insurance company. If you don’t trust any insurance company why are you trusting the sketchy car company policy you didn’t read the fine print on over the one you chose?

Because that's how I roll, man. I find it simple in my pea brain to insure specific things individually. I don't expect my car's insurance to cover my wife's SUV. I have insurance for each individually.
When I'm in my rental Dart, I want insurance specific to that. It helps me enjoy my vacation.

Doesn’t everyone know that you rent the crappiest car but everyone does the same and they have to give you the way better vehicle. I’ve never gotten the compact that I’ve “reserved”. We don’t have the Nissan Shart you rented, but we have the BMW though. Ok, I guess. I seriously got a BMW at the 17th enterprise two weeks ago.
I’ve gotten a F150, minivan in Hawaii which was wayyyyy better than the crappo I ‘reserved’. Minivan is 3 times the price. That’s hitting the jackpot.
I think sliver and I would get along. He’s just as fataed as I am.

I did that before kids. Now I can't risk an angry wife with car seats. Happened once. Had to pay a bit to get an upgrade because of stuff didn't fit. More than booking online, so now I try with mid size+.
There's usually some type of midsize+ random I can book through enterprise. I got a small SUV that got upgraded to a full size SUV because of a legit "issue" which was a jackpot too.

Would also highly recommend the sef27 “non-owned automobile” add on to your vehicle policy. I also have CC coverage, never any issues. Never used the coverage on a normal rental vehicle.
I have bought it for motorhomes, since the other coverage doesn’t apply. Also be careful if you get really high end cars, since most policies have a value limit. So don’t rent a lambo and trust the PC Card rental insurance.

I initiated a few claims when I was in Scotland through my CC insurance after declining the rental car stuff. One was for a decent door ding when some dingbat on the ferry opened their door and the brisk Scottish wind swooped it from her hand before she could yell "goodness me!"
The other was for a cracked windshield that I wouldn't have worried about, but it had all the camera systems and what looked to be expensive in-windshield defoggers. So I wanted to get the process started before returning it. It was pretty easy, but turned out to be totally unnecessary because I returned it at 6:30am in the dark, heavy Scottish rain, and the guy did a quick walkabout and signed off. But I don't doubt the CC was going to handle it at that point.

The rental car business would like to thank all of you signing up for their extra insurance. It’s pure profit on their end, far more lucrative than actually renting the car.

Yes, this. CIBC's (*Aventura Gold) is $65,000 MRSP limit for rental car insurance on credit card.

Wormius you should talk to Justin at Gem by Carati. I got my daughter a Hamilton from there for grad. He gives a really generous CP discount and you could probably get a Hamilton or Tissot from him for a price not far off a Moonswatch's price, but it would be a forever watch.

Yes you need to be careful about this. And that is a cdn dollar value unfortunately. There is a lot of rental vehicles out there that are more than $65k.
I recently discovered this when reading the fine print of our WestJet world elite card. I would suggest using your normal personal vehicle insurance is the better more reliable road if you have that on your policy.
I hate fine print.
