You have to be able to push back with something.

Gadjovich has been huge in the playoffs. Can’t remember who the Stars have.

I simply wouldn’t.
Sequencing is important. Building depth before acquiring stars, lessens your chance of drafting the stars.
Also, we should just use our picks to draft our own Jeannot-type players in later rounds.
It’s best to build through the draft on all fronts, and in my eyes that should mean you do not trade draft picks at this stage of the building process. Look at the Ohktohuik (sp…?) trade - it’s easy to justify blowing a 5th on a player and not having it work “because there’s a chance”, but once those type of trades start stacking up what you’ve done is robbed your building process of the opportunity to actually build something of worth.

I think it might be 5’10” Braydon McCallum. He’s a tough little nut to crack, and led the OHL in PIM.

Tough guys are a dime a dozen. Sign them or ELCs not trade for them with draft picks.

Top line power forwards and agitators are relatively rare. But tough guys with very few other perks are quite common.
For every Tkachuk there's dozens of Zac Rinaldo's, mostly in the AHL.

Right but all those guys Sandman listed are bottom of the roster guys who shouldn't be acquired for picks. Is all Im sayin'.

But what if the Flames could upgrade a draft pick, or pick up an extra pick, just for taking on the salary cap of someone like Jeannot?
I agree, no more trades like a 3rd for Bollig type guys. But if theres and opportunity to uograde the draft situation AND add a guy like Jeannot to the roster, i dont see the down side.

Oh ya I would do that, his contract expires after next season, so it would be a win.
Plus he was traded for a first before, maybe showcase him pump his numbers and flip him.

Echoing Snuff here. Figure out what your roster is first, become a consistent playoff team, and then worry about filling out your roster with toughness.
Throwing away 2nds for Tanner Jeannot's of the league right now is putting the cart before the horse.

Man, if the Flames trade a 2nd round pick for a 26 year old 4th liner making over $2.5 million next year and is then a free agent the following season, I will be awfully disappointed. That's a step in the wrong direction IMO
You're hoping to hit on that 2nd round pick and end up with a solid player who will hopefully be a part of your organization for over a decade and throughout the prime of his career.
Throwing that chance away to add an expensive depth player to a roster that likely isn't even going to make the playoffs is not what I want to see. Stockpile picks, draft a TON of players. Don't bleed them like the Flames have always done.

Sharks signed Will Smith today. They're going to run their 1/2 punch starting next year.
I'm kinda jealous of a Celebrini/Smith combination down the middle.
Can we draft a center please. Thanks.

Yep! That's the kind of trade you make when you've built a good young core that are mostly on their ELCs/cheaper second contracts, and you want to add some depth/beef to the bottom of the lineup. Not the kind of trade you make while you're heading into 3-5 years of misery.
I have no problem signing a guy like Colton for ~3-4 years, if he's UFA while we're rebuilding, but please stop paying for players that we don't need.

Maybe Mangiapane keeping a little salary back for Kakko and you might only need to sweeten it with a mid-round pick. Other than being a left winger, Mangiapane could be a really good fit there, as he can play up and down the lineup.

I doubt any talk of taking Jeannot involves us burning a pick. Contrary, he will be accompanied with a pick in exchange for helping TBL get out of cap hell with something of low value from the Flames going back (AHL player or late pick).

That may be the case, but I'd still rather give the roster spot to a young up and comer than Tanner Jeannot.

I can't see Jeannot being a pure cap dump. I also can't see Calgary giving up anything more than a late-round pick for a guy like him right now. (Marek was just speculating that he might be a good fit in Calgary. He was just talking.)
Jeannot's two years out from a breakout rookie season, there was a bidding war that got Nashville a 1st rounder at last year's trade deadline even though he hadn't put up many points before the trade, and he only has one year left on a non-albatross contract. He's not a typical cap dump.
I'd wager that another team will probably value him more than the Flames to at least give up a mid-round pick.
