Jeannot is the better player IMO but the Flames aren't in a spot to be spending any assets on that player type.

Flames have the space to take on bad contracts. Grab bad contracts that expire in a year for assets, or sign 1 year UFAs, play them, and sell at the deadline. Perfect time to do it, and as other have mentioned we need to be another bottom 10 finish. Trading Markstrom is important.

Sounds like Seattle's coach will be Dan Bylsma.

Does Bylsma still got it? I dunno.

^ Poor hire IMO but with Brind'amour not moving I'm not sure what their options were

Looking it up maybe Jay Leach should have been the guy

Has done extremely well with Coachella last season and this one. Was an assistant coach in Detroit before that, and a brief, but bad stint in Buffalo after his glory days in Pittsburgh. I think he has likely adapted to the new way of hockey (more skill) and am intrigued on what he can do now with Seattle.

Wasn't Buffalo after Pittsburgh?

If I'm helping a team out of a cap crunch, I'm bringing back a better player than Jeannot in the process.

The odds of a player being an NHLer let alone as good as Necas at the Canucks pick is pretty slim. Again, no brainer to me.

I get people wanting to take on bad contracts for picks or sign UFA's to try and trade, but the reality is the team doesn't have many roster spots available except on defense.

Hubderdeau
Kadri
Backlund
Coleman
Mangiapane

5 veterans with Mangiapane the one possibly or maybe likely to be moved.

Kuzmenko
Sharangovich

Potential trade deadline bait. Or re-signed.

Conor Zary
Matthew Coronato
Jakob Pelletier
Martin Pospisil

4 young players pretty much guaranteed a roster spot. If they don't promote any other young players next season, that's already 10 roster spots gone with Mangiapane traded, 11 without (or if a player comes back).

Could fill some defenseman roster spots though.

I disagree with Marek and don't see any dots to connect here, but Jeannot is an interesting case. He was a beast in his first full season and incredibly noticeable out there. Then he declined right away. Why? Is he washed up? That certainly wasn't a fluke of a first season - he was rolling over guys.

That first season was enough for Tampa to bet basically an entire draft class on him. He still hasn't rebounded. Given the cap room and the usefulness of having a deterrent while you bring up rookies into the NHL, I would throw a low-round draft pick to see if he rebounds here. If he does, you can either re-sign him, or you can flip him for a great return. If he bombs, who cares? Not that you want to throw low-round draft picks away, but with the cap room and roster, I am all for signing UFAs to show-me deals to flip at the deadline, or buy-low candidates to either flip or keep for the rebuild. The key here is cheap acquisition cost. I am also all about grabbing other team's bad cap hits (no longer than 3 years - preferably 1 year term left) with a sweetener. Calgary just has to maximize their cap room.

The 28th pick has about a 50% chance of playing at least 100 games.

For a 2nd round pick, it’s about 34%.

I’d take my chance on the 2nd pick trying to add skill and speed to the line and not wasting it on a 4th liner plugger that brings nothing to the team.

Talking about spending 2nd, or any round pick on players like Jeannot is crazy talk!

The path to success for this team is through the draft. Be patient. That's how you get the Brayden Point, Jason Robertson, Nikita Kucherov, and Johnny Gaudreau's of the league - you need to make the picks.

Tanner !@#$ing Jeannot?

Cant argue with your logic here. I guess it depends on the pick? Like the idea of a deterrent for some of the young guys coming up.

People mentioned him as a target for a Hanifin trade. Ugh.

We already have grit in the lineup.

Deterrents are a thing of the past.

Lucic did nothing to deter other teams.

The Devils just aquired Kurtis MacDermid to deter Matt Rempe.

If what you’re saying is true, Pat Maroon would’ve been out of the league a few years ago. Plus, how does one prove that Lucic deterred anything? I say he made his teammates feel a lot more secure. Goons might not be a big part of the game these days, but you still have to have something to push back with…

Rempe shouldn’t be playing hockey. He is embarrassing out there, trying to injure people. It’s actually wild the Rangers have him and Trouba that play the game the wrong way.

Lucic hardly wanted to fight or do anything, I don’t think it makes a difference.

Of the 4 teams left only the Rangers are employing a goon.
