The profile on Catton is giving me serious Nic Petan vibes. I think the Flames had him ranked close to Klimchuck if he was taken.

Keep in mind that we're drafting 9th, which means that the other players available at that time will also have been passed over at least 7 times, so it's not like he'll be out of his depth if his still available then.

So what don't you like about him? What is it that makes you not want him?

One: position of least need, both now and always, easier to acquire a winger than a center or defence unless you happen to be one of no more than about five guys in the league.

Two: projection. Top six winger is where he projects. I see almost ten defencemen that could pan out to be top pair guys. Buium, sylaev, levshunov, dickinson, yakemchuk, parehk all have potential to be top pair guys worth more than top six wing.

Three: forwards. if demidov was na him and celebrini are a step above. No competition. Lindstrom i see his floor as bottom six, his likely hood top six, but could also be a star center. No competition.
Catton? One if the smartest players in the game, always plays center and loves to attack the middle of the ice. great jr numbers, smaller but could also play wing. Again no competition.

Not sure what separates tij from sennecke who has way better build, good jr numbers in spite if growing five inches, and also had a great playoffs? Or hage who is a decent sized center with very good skating, good iq, a great shot, and the more coveted position? Helenius may have the best iq in the draft u see him as a better backlund, he is a kid already playing against men. Winner helenius.

Years here and i dont remember a separate thread for pretty much any other recent top ten pick?

Also not that i dont like the player but even if he pans as a top six winger and we blew by a bunch if top pair defenders or a center? Something we have struggled for years to get?

Unless your name is demidov i dont see any other winger that will have the impact that some if the names i mentioned will have.

This is the Mark Jankowski story. Small kid who had a huge growth spurt. Minus Jankowski's family connections.

Also I've been seeing more and more mocks with Catton dropping to the 10-15 range.
There seems to be a realistic possibility that one or both of Hage and Sennecke could sneak into the top 10, which would make the draft really interesting.

I stopped paying attention to McKeens when they ranked Mike McLeod #2 in 2016. That take didn't make it to their final list, to be fair, but still.

That was exactly my first thought with this too. No to Senneke unless he's available with our second 1st round pick.

Maybe I'm offbase, but it would be a true waste to take someone that might turn into an okay 2 way defender when you have legitimate game altering talent available in the top 10.

If the Flames want this type of player, there are plenty to look at with the 28th OA pick. With the state of this team and its high end talent, you better be going after it with the 9OA.

Another interesting tidbit I just noticed today... Iggy had exactly 0 PIMs in 11 playoff games this season.

He led his team in goals, points, points per game, 5v5 goals, 5v5 points, 5v5 points per game and also led all forwards in +/- (second on the team, behind a defenceman).

He did all that, in spite of being the primary focal point of their entire offence and having one of the biggest last names in hockey (adds to players focusing on him)... all without taking one single penalty.

Soft, doesn’t care, let’s take an NCAA defenseman.

Agreed, the team really cannot afford to take a no offense guy in the top 10, especially with the quality of player available at that pick.

In today’s game, we all stress the importance of centres and defencemen - which is not wrong. However, I would hate to overlook the value of a highly skilled winger like Tij. Look at how valuable skilled wingers that excel in high pressure situations have been to recent deep playoff runs (Marcheseault, Tkachuk, etc.). And I think Tij is built to be a player similar to them. A good comparison to a player in these playoffs is Lafreniere. I think Tij is a better skater but his skill set is very similar.

The point is, if Iginla is the more skilled player who could be more of an impact player, I would go with him over a centre that is not as likely to be a big game NHLer. There’s no guarantees at the draft but I see so much potential in Tij and he looks like such a pro already despite being one of the youngest players in the draft.

All comes down to how they project them. If they think Tij is a top line winger and the other guys are #2Cs and second pairing dmen then go Tij. If they think #1C or top pairing D then go with them.

Curious, how many centres or defenders drafted the same year as Jarome had better careers?

Would you have rather had Bedard, Redden or Langkow?

Folks are saying the same things about Tij that they said about his dad back in the day. He is a game breaker.

This. 100% this. How many times in the last two seasons did it become painfully obvious that we lack a single game breaker on this team?

Give me a player who not only wants the puck on their stick in the biggest of moments... but one whose stick can be counted on when we need it.

I'm all in on Tij and don't disagree about his potential, but this isn't the 1995 draft, and there could be a Cale Makar or a Victor Hedman or an Alex Barkov in the top 10 of this draft (besides Celebrini).

That's why there's so much of a discussion. And while I'd be pumped to get Iginla, I'd also be good with a number of other prospects here.

If Tij is available at 9 and he's up against Catton, Helenius and Yakemchuk, then I'd probably be disappointed if they didn't draft Iginla. But if Silayev, Levshunov, Demidov, Lindstrom or one of the other three top defenders are still there, I sure hope the Flames' management has taken an incredibly hard look at each and not just automatically picks Iginla.

If they take him over those guys, I'd still be happy with him, but they shouldn't just assume he's going to 100% turn out like his dad and take him regardless.

Hey man, I loves me some Makar and Barkov... but Iggy Sr. is 7th all-time in era-adjusted goals.

1. Alex Ovechkin 954
2. Gordie Howe 925
3. Jaromír Jágr 841
4. Wayne Gretzky 758
5. Teemu Selänne 741
6. Brett Hull 738
7. Jarome Iginla 706
8. Brendan Shanahan 672
9. Phil Esposito 671
10. Sidney Crosby 655

There are not many players in the history of this league that I would rather draft than Jarome Iginla.

Take it with a grain of salt as things can always change, but I’ve been told he’s as good as gone to the Habs.

Yeah, nothing other than my own thoughts, but I don't think there's any chance Tij is around at 9. Maybe a blessing in disguise for the Flames and the player. Those expectations would be through the roof.
