This team can't afford to be throwing away assets.

Ovbiously we won't know until draft day, but I will be very very surprised if he's still on the board for us at 9.

From what I've been given, Montreal has had no other multi-interview candidates and will select Iginla almost certainly.

I have not heard that at all. Interesting if true.

Just 43 more days of being told daily there's a pretty good chance he won't be gone by 9.

I actually think Montreal's rumoured interest in Iginla could be a move to try to get a team to bite and move up.
Agree with most takes here. Fine with taking him if he is there at 9...but dont' trade up...if he's gone that just means one of Catton, Lindstrom, etc is still there.

I'd be willing to trade up.
The value of a 5th vs. 9th means something. The further into the draft you go, the more you decrease your odds on your pick.
At this stage, I'm dreaming of acquiring the 10th overall pick AND trading up.
Give me Tij + Catton/Lindstrom/Helenius/one of the defencemen.
That's about the only way how you can fast-forward this process.

I think that is also a strong possibility. Chum the waters to try and get Calgary to move up. Although, I could only imagine the meltdown if the Flames traded up to select a dman like the Athletic article had them doing.

I don't really buy that on this draft. This one is basically wide open in the top 12 and that is barring a team going off the board with someone in 13-20 range. Tij isn't a lock to go top 5 at all especially if the Canadiens like a different forward better. If the Flames traded a 2nd or 3rd to move up I wouldn't love it but I'd be fine with it.

When I look at the names I have 8 guys that I would almost for sure* take ahead of Iginla and a couple other guys that I would have as roughly on par with him. Either some team takes him before us... which is great because it means at least 1 of those guys is there for us to take, some team takes some some other guy and 1 of those 8 guys is available for us to take, or all 8 of those guys are gone in which case Iginla is there for the taking if we think he's the best available at 9.
Under zero circumstances should we be sacrificing assets in order to specifically take him.
*Assuming there aren't any unknown to us reasons to have them lower (permanent injury/raging drug problem/pending criminal charges etc. etc).

That's because Mitchkov basically expressed which teams he would come over and play for. Montreal probably not one of them.

What you've been given sounds like the theory of a fan trying to manifest Iginla to the Habs because he's all the rage right now.
For the organization to pass up due diligence when some potentially good centers and #1-2D are available seems unlike how any NHL club would conduct itself.

Montreal is a team where Iginla would make sense if they don't like the centers

Not necessarily.
After Celebrini, there's a whole tier of players that are fairly interchangeable, which means they're highly comparable in projections/ceilings. It doesn't mean as much as in other draft years because of that - only if you reeally love one particular guy. But that's team-specific. I think we could see a swap in that top tier of picks based on who teams want and what others are thinking, and it might not be for a hefty price because of the above reason.

Last month had a rumour stating that Montreal met with Iginla 4x. There weren't any other rumours about Montreal having conversations with any other prospect, but that certainly doesn't mean that they didn't (and I would assume that they did, if for no other reason than to just be thorough).
We don't know for sure if Tij is #1 on Montreal's list or not (or their expected target anyway for their position, just to be clear). We just know that they seem to have interest.

In my opinion there are a grand total of three guys I would consider trading up for (depending on cost of course)... Celebrini, Demidov, and Levshunov. Other then those three I'll just happily take whomever is the best available at 9.
