not sure about worst, but Rene Bourque is still probably the dumbest hockey player I've ever watched.

Still super annoyed Flames traded Regehr for Butler.

My point is that was always the plan- let him play a few meaningless games for a non-playoff team with no intention of re-signing him.

Not the worst, but here is a list of some of the most disappointing:
Huberdeau - Record breaking point decrease, paid like a star player.
Brad Stuart - Came with so much hype and decent resume. Did nothing.
Hamonic - Paid a huge price for, was just an average to below average player.
Friesen - Good resume, just did nothing for the Flames.
Neal - Big free agent signing and one of the worst player to have worn the Flames jersey after that.
Buzek - Technically an "all star", but barely an NHL player with the Flames.
Baertschi - Looked like potential homerun pick, but a pretty big bust.
Fata - Another that looked like a homerun, but couldn't do squat.

I actually don't think he was lazy. I think he just couldn't keep up with the play mentally.

He was lazy. He was even lazy doing a line change.

Cale Hulse
Ed Ward
Jason Weimer
3 games of Freddy Modin
Petr Butzek
Greg Smyth
There were many many players that were considered bad because they didn't live up to salary and or expectations of they were supposed to be, who they replaced, or other things.
That list is a lot longer, trying to keep it to regulars, not 1 year 3rd or 4th liner plugs.
Leeman - never was going to replace Gilmour, but he didn't date younger girls so that was a Flames organizational win
Neal - got paid after proving the Pens wrong for letting him go to Vegas in the expansion draft, and just let his work effort slide, as the talent was still there.
Kidd - not terrible but wasn't the goalie that team needed
Krahn - hometown draft pick to make the Calgary draft a feel good story for a few days
Morris - all the talent, and ability to win the Norris, but after a rookie season, decided to coast the rest of his career
Niedermeyer - actually a good player, but paid a lot and replaced Bure so had expectations to score.
Eriksson - actually punched above his pay grade and weight, paired with Phanuef.
Reichel folded like a cheap tent in the playoffs, as he single-handedly had the 1994 and 1995 first round wins on his stick, but missed, Vancouver putting the puck right into McLean, and SJ game 7, hit the post twice on sure fire goals.

Never forgot where he got a unsportsmanlike penalty because he carried a broken stick around for 10-15 seconds. I don't think the refs could even believe what they saw as he forechecked in the offensive zone like that.

Kidd was a big disappointment for me, but as I recall didn’t he and his girlfriend hit a moose while on holidays in Montana the summer before his first pro training camp with the Flames? From what I remember he had some significant leg injuries from that and was never the same again. Stupid moose probably derailed what might have otherwise been a different career for Kidd.
Edit…couldn’t find a Google reference to that so maybe I’m misremembering. Does anyone else recall that story? Was that Regehr and not Kidd maybe?
Editx2…nope. Regehr’s accident was a head on with another vehicle in Saskatchewan.

Anders Eriksson, with Zyuzin coming in second. Those two are on an island together when it comes to the worst ever.

You're just mad because he couldn't speak french despite having a stereotypical french name.

Anyone remember the late Greg Smyth?
Big slow defenceman, played 42 games for the Flames in '91-92 and '92-93. I vividly remember him being interviewed on the radio when he came here from the Nordiques. I believe it was Peter Maher who asked him what was the highlight of his NHL career so far, and he said: ‘That would have to be the time I scored a goal.’
Smyth scored one as a rookie with the Flyers in '86-87. His next goal was with the Flames, five seasons later. He bounced around the league, played for six teams altogether, then was assistant coach of the St. John's Maple Leafs for a whole month before getting in a fight with two of his own players. He was canned the following day. Seemed like a nice guy, but he was a lousy player and a complete washout as a coach.
