I think there's a good chance he's playing through an injury. IMO his play fell off significantly after the TD, and just kept getting worse. Personally it reminds me of when Monahan was playing through injuries, resulting in gradually worse performances.

I doubt it. Petterson is known to disappear for months on end.

Tochet also said he was fine and not injured a week ago. This wouldn't be the first time elias petterson disappeared. Didn't he go like 40 or 50 games with no 5 on 5 goals a few years ago?

His coach called him out. Coaches don’t call out injured players to be better.

Someone can correct me if wrong, but wasn’t he on a scoring tear with Kuzmenko? Once Kuzmenko was traded he went cold. Maybe it coincides with an injury as well.

That's fair. I didn't realize his coach was calling him out.

I don't think that Kuzmenko was it. He was mostly playing with Mikheyev - Lafferty, followed by Boeser - Miller, and only then by Mikheyev - Kuzmenko leading up to the trade.

After the trade, when it was clear Lindholm wasn't working Pettersson mostly played with Hoglander + Boeser/Suter/Garland/Lindholm.

In the playoffs it's Hoglander+ Mikheyev.

Petterson is a really slight guy and is always going to be more of a complementary guy in the playoffs. As with Kuzmenko I don't think he's a good fit for the style of hockey Tocchet wants the team to play as his production slowed down in the 2nd half of the season as the Canucks transitioned to a more defensive style of play as he's scored only 2 goals in his last 23 games. I don't think it really matters as the Canucks aren't going to win this series unless they start putting more pucks on net. Their low shot volume is totally ridiculous.

I imagine hoglander will draw back in next game after being scratched… since the coach thinks he had “5-6 passengers” out there.

Even Huberdeau would have more points than Pettersson in the playoffs, and that’s saying something.

Yeah, people sort of glance over just how different the playoffs are from the regular season. During the season, guys take shifts off allllllllll the time. The best will capitalize on those opportunities. Over 82 games, those stats add up significantly.

When the games really matter, and only the best teams are left, the entire game plan is to lock down the skilled guys. Some players entire role will be shutting a guy down. And they’ll hardly take a shift off. It impacts production every single year for the best regular season players. The ones who can break through that next level become legends.

with certain players, it seems obvious that they aren't the type of player that will step it up at playoff time. Petterson shouldn't surprise anyone. To me its predictable. His small size is no excuse, its a mindset. lots of small guys excel at playoff time. Not to turn this into a Huberdeau take but does anyone actually see him elevating at playoff time?

It was moderately tolerable living in Ontario during this series. Visiting Calgary however… and seeing all the Canuck and Oiler gear on… #### this ####. Can’t end fast enough.

It comes off like intentional rope a dope or an extended PK..

I can't understand what Tocchet is thinking here when they have depth they do, and yet they're 2-2 in the second round and could easily be up 3-1.

Just imagine where they'd be if they were executing the offense-first approach they had in front of Demko, with Demko.

I think they're a superior forechecking team to Edmonton when they're actually trying to do it.

You saw it in period 1 of the prior game. They exposed the Oilers. Why not just stick to that? Seems Tocchet is adverse to doing the run and gun style with Edmonton but at the same time is neutering his own team's offense.
I think he's terrified to put his team in a position where they might end up pursuing the puck carrier and taking a penalty. The way Edmonton's power play is, giving up a penalty to them is like giving up a penalty shot to any other team. 50/50.

Man, if I was a Canucks fan, I would be so livid about Petterson. Where the hell is he?

That honestly is the takeaway for Vancouver.

Elias Peterson looks lost out there. Falling down. Fumbles pucks. Turns it over on the cycle. Doesn't know when to shoot vs pass anymore.

He needs to go lay a hit on someone. Doesn't have to be huge, but it will get him in the game.

I don't think that there is a way that he isn't injured right now. This has been something since the regular season. He looks slow and can't take a shot, even with time. When he is healthy he is a dynamic player but right now he looks slow and timid.

A very different player than who we saw in the bubble playoffs so I don't know if it is just a story of someone who can't play at a high level, even if those playoffs were really weird.

Over a point a game player in the playoffs coming into this year, have to think there is an injury.

On the bright side, this is the Oilers and they will start Pickard again and likely be feeling pretty cocky. Vancouver will be more aggressive, they'll take more shots, and they'll likely win and have a chance to close out the Oilers on Saturday.

I do feel slightly better knowing that the Canucks still have home ice advantage. Getting the split in Edmonton was huge after losing game 2

You mean the team who set the record for lowest shots on goal to start the playoffs. Lol
