100%. Those trades a year+ in advance don't matter (and is what we're hoping for with that 2026 VGK pick), but still 3 out of 5 years do have trades at or near the draft that did result in top-10'ish picks moving.

New Jersey does not need the 10th overall, they have an already stacked team full of young players, there time is now to compete, there may be a history that trades like this don't transpire, but it does make sense that new jersey would be willing to trade this pick for the right goaltender.
Perhaps markstrom for that pick is not fair value for new jersey, but if Calgary is willing to add that later pick in the first round, I think you are pretty close to fair value for both sides.

Markstrom may not be there first target, but there will be very few "good" goaltenders available this summer, new jersey may not have much of a choice.
If Conroy is smart, he can definitely leverage these facts, and get either a quality young player or their first round pick

Fitzgerald mentions trading the pick in the article on the Devils website noting their draft position post-lottery.
https://www.nhl.com/devils/news/devi...y-results-blog
"Having the tenth overall pick in this upcoming draft gives us many options this off-season," General Manager Tom Fitzgerald said after the results were revealed. "We have the opportunity to select a really good young player that our scouting staff likes. Or it can be another bullet in my holster to utilize if a deal presents itself."

No, they're not going to do that. If the Devils want Askerov they'll have to pony up more then #10OA.
|
If they are committed to Saros long term why would they not move a goalie prospect they drafted 11th overall for pick 10? Has Askerov come in and set the league on fire? Goalies are voodoo, he could very well bust out. I don't say any way Trotz would say no and I don't see any way Fitzgerald says yes. The Devils want to be in win now mode and they want an established goalie.

A top prospect making ELC money (I assume).
Even if he plays behind Saros for the duration of whatever that deal is or will be, he provides great value.

He would be a great get for a team that isn't there yet like a Columbus or Anaheim but a team looking to run at a Cup? That could be Samsonov all over again. I think teams like getting good prospects in ELC for forward and defence but goaltending is a different story. Also, goalies tend to take a lot longer to hit their prime, he could take as long as Markstrom did to hit his potential even. It makes no sense for the Devils.

I believe Saros is 29 or 30, and only has 1 year left on his contract. Not a long term commitment at this stage any more, and he'll be wanting a payday on his next deal.

He is 29 which is generally the prime of a goalie. Trotz has already said they want to keep him going forward. He also doesn't have a lot of miles on him, probably good for another 8 years or more of high level goaltending.

That GM is on the hotseat, he can't afford another losing season, especially if it is because of goaltending, he needs an established goaltender, not a "maybe "
Take advantage Connie!

Pretty sure I never talked about the 10th overall, but don't let the facts get in your way.
What I said was that they likely make the playoffs with Markstrom (and it goes without saying that the pick would have been protected).
But you do you.

Yeah, the TDL deal assumes that the pick is 17+OA. But the rumours conflict over whether they even offered the first (or for what year).

Yup. And the value of picks changes, as you approach the draft, and once you are certain where you're drafting.
In March, it was a 1st, and eyes were on the playoffs. Now it's the 10th overall. And the playoffs went byebye

There will be two goalies, Ullmark and Markstrom. Nashville has never ever given any indication that they want to trade Saros.

I'd take a look at Stolarz if I was Jersey in addition to your list. He could be available if Spencer Knight is ready to go next season.
Wouldn't be opposed to moving Schmid if he's unhappy with his lot in life.

It’s a tough choice but the Flames I would take a top 10 pick in this draft and get a top line C or D
