They have some time as well, even with the new rink that will attract people regardless of who is playing for us.
By that time we are hopefully putting in 2-3 good young players into the lineup.

Even in the worst of the worst days we had Theo, Iggy, ect. IF someone could get Marner at a value price it could be smart, I never buy the can't play in the playoffs crap...it also takes offence to get there. My guess is Marner is on a deep run with a US team within a couple years...Leaf fans Pokemon face.

So, how is Calgary going to get that star player without drafting one?
Is Marner going to waive to come here, and sign a long extension? And how may points would he get if he's playing with Huberdeau instead of Matthews?
I'm not saying your wrong, because I think you are correct about the fans in Calgary needing some star power.
But they aren't likely to be able to trade for a guaranteed star or sign one in UFA at this stage.
Which brings us back to the most likely way, being the draft.

We might take a hit in attendance for 1 more year. Draft a star, the team might not rise in the standings but the attendance will.

just win the lottery for a generational player
got it
Flames are not like US teams that can just suck into oblivion for 5-10 years and then suddenly awaken, its been too long already. They need to draft well and not lose players for nothing ect. but they need some star power now.
IMO of course

Flip the argument, though, and think what a disaster it could be if Marner is traded here and he pulls a Huberdeau -- or leaves after one year where he produces just enough for Calgary to finish 11th.
Flames' fans have a little bit of patience as long as the team looks like it's going somewhere and we're putting exciting prospects and young players in the lineup. Conroy has said he's not fully rebuilding, but doubt he goes after a guy like Marner unless Toronto is basically giving him away.
Marner has decent value still regardless of how that fanbase perceives him.

Is there a way to set the trade rumours topic to alert you when the discussion of acquiring Mitch Marner is over?

How do we draft better but have stars?
You want to compete when we have those stars.

from my first statement I am not talking about Marner in particular but I also wouldn't scoff at it. He plays for the Leafs and they suck in the playoffs and are front page news in Canada. He is still a HELL of a hockey player.
Like I said in the near future he will be lighting it up in the US and likely going on a big time run. Leaf fans Pokemon face. Someone is gonna laugh all the way to the bank on Marner. I mean Eichel couldn't lead his team to the playoffs let alone a cup not long ago. Leafs lose because they are a poorly built team, not because of Mitch Marner although he will be the scapegoat.

You can draft better no matter where you pick...if your goal is to suck and draft top 3 GL. Flames are already better than a bottom 5 team.
Make smart trades...2026 unprotected first is a good start. Vegas can suck and win the lottery.

You said Theo and Iggy were good draws. It does not need to be Bedard.
People might come to watch Tij.
I'm sure lots will come to watch Celebrini.
Flames trade Rasmus and Markstrom for Marner and then fork out $12 mil a year for him...we will suck for years. Markstrom and Rasmus would leave huge holes on this team and they combined make less than Marner.

If the Flames franchise can't survive a rebuild like they did 10 years ago then they don't deserve a franchise lol.
The Flames are already losing the next generation of fans in Alberta to Edmonton because of McDavid and Draisaitl. Staying in the mushy middle will just deepen that trend. No one wants to watch a vet laden team struggle to try and make the playoffs and unless the Flames can trade for a #1 center and #1D then that is all more vets will get them.

We won't be getting stars if we are drafting 15th every year with a false hope of trying to get in the playoffs with a mishmash of players.

It happens.
It will probably take alot longer though.
Boston got pasta and mcavoy within 3 years both mid range 1st rounders.
Islanders got Barzal and Dobson with mid range 1st rounders.
Kucherov, nylander, Point, aho, hintz, robertson and josi are some other examples drafted later in the 1st or 2nd round.
Albeit the flames havnt drafted a star in the mid-to-late 1st/2nd round since the 80s lmao. Maybe we're due big time though?

Sure, and we have found gems in the later rounds as well. But we need picks. Trying to compete usually means sending picks out.
2022 draft we had 3 picks.

We already did this once. We got stars like Phil Housley, Zarley Zakapski, etc. it did not work. I would prefer we try a different approach to build a winner. I suffered through those stars as a season ticket holder, it was tough.

Or even better, when there’s an actual, credible rumour instead of wild trade proposals and fantasy draft scenarios.

But why not focus on trying to get more out of picks at that spot or in the other rounds. Nothing wrong with getting better at drafting.
You can't get superstar players in that spot most years, but you can get pretty good ones if you really dial it in. I get that you and the tank crew want the Flames to be dead last for the next 5 years. But there will be years coming out of this cycle where the Flames will draft 12 to 25...they need to focus on maximizing the entire draft haul every season. Not sure shy it makes you so mad to say otherwise. Plus even 5 straight #1 picks will do nothing if the support cast does nothing. You need 2-3 guys pushing for jobs every season.
