Well the numbers once he got healthy says he has the talent to do it. Now if he has the ability to show up every night for 82 games is an entirely different story.

That’s about 3 top 9 forwards too many.

Duclair and Reinhart are the only two ufas that immediately jump off the page to fit that need.
Otherwise you can't really pinpoint a player you know for sure will mesh with him. We've had a lot of candidates tried out there already.

I don't remember Hubby playing with Rhino. In theory Hoffman fits the bill as well, on a cheap 1 year contract. Maybe Ekblad becomes available for cheap on the last year of his deal.

Guess it all comes down to the 200 feet of ice, and who you see as a driver.
Backlund has been a consistent line driver who puts up 40 points a season and has intangibles out the wazoo.
Last year 39 points - check
2nd on the team in xGF% behind linemate Coleman - check
Now Mangiapane is good too ... play driving wise, but he also plays with Backlund.
I usually defend Mangiapane to the people that pile on, but Backlund has always elevated players he's played with, and I'm not sure that's the case with Mangiapane.
I don't see anything in Backlund's season that's disappointing at all. A point under his checkmark production, but now in his mid 40s is a solid season from a vet.

Backlund also fell off at the end of the year while he was playing injured, too. What was it, one point in the last fourteen games?
He was better than his final statline IMO.

I think Mangiapane gets moved this offseason. We have a lot of young wingers needing spots.
Huberdeau - Sharangovich - Coronato
Zary - Kadri - Kuzmenko
Pelletier - Backlund - Coleman
*** - Rooney - Pospisil
If they see Sharangovich as more of a winger than that takes away another winger spot.
Not sure how they see Zary, winger or center.
Either way I don’t see the Flames bringing in a UFA winger unless they move Mangiapane and another one out.

The thing with Mangiapane will be how hard is he to move with the full season salary owed? Even if you retain 50%, it's still a heavier ticket over a full season. Whereas at the deadline your 50% after paying 70% and getting a broker to eat 370'ish in cash to hold another 50 to get the remaining cap hit to 1.45.
So as much as you want to open spots now, that's still a hard contract to move. I think he'll score in a contract year, so I'd try and build his value up to move him. Otherwise you're giving away a player that could have returned something, and I don't see him as an addition by subtraction type of problem.

Presuming that a Markstrom trade will also require retention, that's two slots used up which would constrict future options at the TDL with only one more retention slot open. It's a difficult situation.

I still don’t think they retain on Markstrom. My guess is it will be a contract coming back to make the cap work.
No point in trading any of the upcoming UFAs this summer unless someone overpays. Only UFA I’d want them to potentially re-sign is Sharangovich

Exactly, if you've burned up 2 slots before puck drop what do you lose with potential moves for Sherangovich or Kuzmenko?
If you need to retain to move Markstrom, than you need to try and keep as much flexibility as long as you can on the other slots.

I’d move Mangiapane and then reunite the Kidri line, go with Huberdeau, Sharangovich and Kuzmenko (he has had some chemistry with both) and then put Coronato in Mangiapane’s spot.

Cap is going up next season, maybe some teams don't use it all.
Is retention used a lot in offseason trades, or it more of a in season tool?
