Glad to see that parochial muttonhead Ric McIver get some airtime this week. Hate to see such a useful idiot kept to the shadows while the rest of the buttmuppets in cabinet soak up the spotlight.

The trees that West Fraser wants to cut down near Bragg Creek will take about 70 years to regrow in that area, to the size they are now. The plan is too extensive for fire breaks, so this is just an economic play.
That's a really beautiful piece of land. And it got ridiculously busy there since covid. This might be the best way to slow down traffic. I think that they are breaking ground on a big hotel in Bragg Creek this year, and have to make those investors regret that, too. Trudeau stays in hotels. Screw that guy.

On one side they want to build a dam and flood beautiful places to reduce flooding risks, on the other they authorize tree cuts that will make flash floods far more devastating.
It's like they don't posses a brain at all.

So why did the UCP need to introduce legislation allowing councillors to be fired when the current law already grants the minister that power? As folk wisdom has it, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
The explanation is in the difference between due process and arbitrary power.
The Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendments Act will eliminate the guardrails that ensure due process is observed and no one is fired unfairly or improperly.
As University of Alberta political science professor Jared Wesley put it on social media Saturday, Bill 20 is politically targeted legislation, “all about making moderates and progressives accountable to provincial cabinet on pain of removal.”

I hadn't realized our pants on head stupid prrmeier was still getting her orders directly from David Parker, but that appears to be the case. He was told to please kindly shut the #### up, but I guess that's just in public. How do we know this? Well, Parker has been on the conspiracy train of voting tabulating machines, and has spread that to Smith, who put banning tabulating machines in the most recent "taking back control from municipalities" bill.
So if it passes we'll be stuck waiting until the next day for results as they are all hand tabulated again. Why? Because or premier is controlled by this guy and she's terrified he'll use his control of UCP boards to fire her ass.
Banana republic, indeed.

Are we certain that they are clear cutting those areas? They did some variable retention harvesting along Highway 22 and I thought it looked quite nice, but then again that might be the forester in me talking.

That estimate is from a local conversation group, talking about the type of trees, soil and natural water supply. I think it was published in the Rocky Mountain Outlook and should be a digital copy somewhere.
It's just a chunk of unusual terrain that will take significant time to rebuild, and is close to a lot of trails important to tourist activity in the area.
West Fraser probably really likes the existing roadwork leading to the area.

So when are they flooding Cochrane? Do we have to buy tickets or can we just show up and watch?
Is it like an old-timey thing where they just shoot a starter's pistol in the air and thats all the warning the locals get?
"BANG! Better get packin'! The water is a comin'!"

Then we can have a world class dive site.
Come dive the left overs of a once mediocre country town.

Ah, there's the caring conservative government we've grown to love.
I'm sure funding the war room is more important than mobility for low income people though. Times are tough. Hard choices to be made. I'm just happy to see we elected such brave ####faces to make them.
