The Flames need a franchise changing defenceman. If one slips to our spot you take him, you can't take Tij because of the last name.

We are building a team here. You win with a #1C and #1D not a bunch of wingers which we are deep in. If Tij is the BPA at our spot take him.

In recent years, the powerplay has been becoming increasingly important. It's part of the reason for scoring having increased so much.

The Flames have really been missing a powerplay quarterback. The Flames were at their best when they had a guy like McInnes on the MacInnis.

Good thing Conroy nabbed Hunter Brzustewicz. I think the Canucks are really going to regret moving him

Franchise changing defencemen don’t fall to 8th haha

Sure a guy could turn out / surprise - but one isn’t falling to that spot who will be expected to be a number 1 D

Imagine him, one of these offensive studs in this draft, and welcome home Makar on the team.

Adam Fox was a 4th rounder, you just never know.

Certainly possible in this draft. Levshunov, Silayev, Yakemchuk, Dickinson, Parekh, and Buium have all been speculated as having that kind of upside.

But by that logic the spot you select doesn’t matter so
Selecting one at 8th is irrelevant

Of course anything could happen . But the odds of getting a franchise altering D at 8 are extremely slim (as are the odds of getting any franchise altering talent at that spot )

Well, if we look at past drafts that doesn't really ring true. Erik Karlsson went 15th overall. Josi 38th overall. Makar went 4th which isn't that far off 8th. Subban 43 overall and Weber 49. Al MacInnis went 15 overall. Ray Bourque 8th overall. Letang went 67 overall, I can go on and on.

This is why taking a dman with a top 10 always seems disappointing. Feels like goalies are the biggest crapshoot, then dmen, then forwards.

This statement is laughably wrong. I randomly chose one year, 2003, and here is a quick list of the best defensemen that year:

49: Weber
7: Suter
14: Seabrook
9: Phaneuf
20: Burns
249: Byfuglien

So then I figured I should try another year.. 2004

nobody

2005:
62: Letang
35: Vlassic

2006 and 2007: nobody

2008:
38: Josi
2: Doughty
4: Pietrangelo
15: Karlsson

so at least we finally found a couple that went before 8th

then I got bored and stopped

Good thing you stopped before 2010. Gudbranson 3OA.

2010 was thin, but the best D was probably Faulk at 37

I’m confused . It doesn’t ring true that you find franchise altering D at 8th because lots were in the 2nd round ?

That’s actually the point - taking a D at 8 because you need a D and hope it will be franchise altering most likely won’t work . D are more unpredictable , especially outside being the top rated D in the draft

I would prefer the Flames keep acquiring lots of mid prospect D and aim for high end forwards with the 1st rounders, since as you have demonstrated most of the best D weren’t actually selected high - where forwards are more constantly

I know you're joking, but Gudbranson doesn't prove anything, one way or the other. I wasn't arguing that top-of-the-draft Dmen don't turn out, they usually do. My point was that defensemen are more random than forwards, and the best ones often are drafted later than top 10 (or 8, or whatever that person said)

I don’t think any of the D in this draft are considered “franchise altering”. They could be franchise altering but there’s no clear cut guy like that. In fact, not many D prospects that I can remember in recent years are considered “franchise altering”. Even Makar, who obviously is, was 4th overall and no one thought he’d be who he is today. Otherwise he would’ve been a no brainer 1st overall. Victor Hedman was considered franchise altering in his draft and it proved to be true. Ekblad was too and he’s had his moments of yes and no. I don’t think he’s altered the franchise.

I don’t think drafting Tij ahead of Buium or Dickinson is the same as drafting him ahead of Hedman or Ekblad on draft night. But who knows, Buium could be the next Adam Fox. I just don’t think it’s a huge stretch on draft night.

I would argue this team needs a game changing skilled forward even more, the flames have a couple of young talented defensemen in the pipeline now but as hard as I try I can’t find a bluechip forward anywhere.

We get stuck on labels
This draft is unique because of the high number of guys with top pairing potential
Which is a key piece. So it’s a great chance to get one
Franchise altering? I don’t know what that bar is
