I agree. I'm not going to speculate or decide what his return should be outside of a higher return per million retained.

All I ask is that Conroy be intellectually honest about the fact we will not compete for anything the next two years, so please retain the max for a better return.

Because the pressure to "save the season" has passed. Conroy wasn't going to move Markstrom unless someone overpaid, now he is forced too. Additionally, I don't believe that Markstrom is the preferred trade target for the Devils.

Man I hope the Flames upper management didn't block a trade with some decent value at the deadline.

IMO Markstroms value has only gone down since that point.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

We don't know what his value was before the deadline. Nothing definitive. If the CP insiders were in the ballpark, it was Holtz and a 1st for Marky and a roster player.

Even if that value isn't there anymore, I'd say with retention at minimum it's Holtz and a 3rd maybe. Something a team wants to offload and a mid pick.

The Devils didn't have any leverage to begin with. Hard to lose something you never possessed.

They had some after thwy because the only party negotiating and Markstrom was willing. Conroy was under some pressure to do a deal. He resisted that pressure.

His trade request will only kill his value if he picks 1 team.

It’s hard to know what his value is, and what exactly was offered.

Fitzgerald made it seem like he was getting squeezed.

That's a bit of a fabrication. Nobody knows if anyone else called on Markstrom.

Flames approached Markstrom when NJD group said they would consider Mercer in the package, However once they got confirmation he would waive they didn’t include him in a package going forward with or without retention. They thought it would pressure the flames into taken a weaker return.

Flames refused to listen on a package at the time that included Holtz+. That + never included a guaranteed 2024 1st. Just conditional picks based on Salary retention and team performance.

Don’t see this being on the agent. It seems pretty evident Markstrom was interested in moving and he and his agent handled it professionally by keeping it low key and allowing the team room to operate. Someone apparently harpooned the deal and now fearing the market may not be as strong, the agent needs to apply some pressure to make sure the team moves his client. The fault in this one likely lies squarely at the feet of the party who put a bullet in the deal at the deadline. Personally I don’t like the chilling effect this could have on Markstrom’s value, but the Flames should have seen this coming.

There was no hint of any other serious bidder.

If that's the case, I don't see the Flames meeting their expected return in the offseason. Who knows though, plenty of young teams needing stable goaltending and some vet teams in need of good goaltending. Lots of options if Marky is open minded.

Namely, Buffalo, Ottawa, Toronto, Colorado.

Other teams did inquire but nothing was ever formalized. I’ve been told he would prefer an eastern conference team as their travel schedule is more favourable now that he has a young family.

NJD, Colorado and LA.

LA attempted to go all in for Ullmark.

Colorado rolled the dice on its current roster.

Whatever….trade Markstrom before the start of next season please

Preferably at the draft

There is zero value in keeping him on the current team

I think we need to be realistic. We are not going a Mercer for a 34 year old goalie. I can see why they got pissed if the Devils are the ones who tried to screw us over.

Holtz and picks really sounds similar to what we paid for Mike Smith, a goalie similar to Makrkstrom.

I don’t think Buffalo will be looking.

Ottawa may be interested but we would have to take Korpisalo…is he a good buy low candidate? Would he be a good mentor for Wolf??

LA, Colorado, NJD and maybe Toronto should be looking. Maybe Utah as well, although I doubt he would waive to go there.

Would suck if we could have got a 1st in the spring. Don't think that's happening anymore.

Well, even though his value will be lower than it was at the deadline and there's a limited amount of potential trade partners, the biggest positive is this can be a catalyst for Wolf moving into the #1 spot.

If I had to guess I would have these teams down as being most interested:
  • New Jersey
  • Toronto
  • Colorado
  • Los Angeles
  • Buffalo
  • Philadelphia
