Which is exactly what Dubas did before him.

It seems pretty clear in this case that the overall strategy is set either by Shanahan or by the suits he reports to in MLSE.

If Treliving felt that he didn't have enough autonomy in Calgary, he must feel like he's in a straitjacket now.

First was too steep for Tanev

I just don't get these teams with obvious needs and in their cup window but won't get off their wallet

Especially because Tre did spend a 1st to get Toffoli when the Flames had a good look at it. I know, extra term, but this is it with Matthews and Nylander having career years and Marner being very good. They are not getting better than this.

The Leafs' wallet is stuffed with money, but not with futures.

As it is, they're missing their 2nd and 3rd this year, and don't draft until the 5th round next year.

I'm getting the impression that the '24 1st is stored in a glass case, on which the following instructions are written in Shanahan's handwriting:

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY:
Swim through piranha tank
Fight pack of wolverines
Separate bear cub from mama grizzly
Charge machine-gun nest
Run over bed of red-hot coals
And if you survive,
BREAK GLASS

So far it's looking like a poor decision...what will that late first be to the Leafs in a few years? You have a high end forward group, take a ####ing swing...zero chance they win a cup until they do

In fairness to them, it’s one game. We should probably wait until they lose to talk about that.

Nah! It's more fun taking shots at the best before 1967 Leafs

Hah, fair enough. I don’t care one way or the other about the Leafs. It’s just funny to me that their own media and fans put all this “pressure” on them. Boston can’t do that to them. They just take advantage of it.

I agree. The media in TO can be brutal when it comes to it's sports teams.

I don't find Toronto media brutal at all. There are just a lot of them, and to fill air time that gets viewership, they love talking about sports, but they aren't brutal day to day at all. There's just a lot of analysis. And I think that's across the north american sports landscape these days. 20 years ago Montreal media would roast a poorly put together team. These days there's not quite the same level of passion. Have you seen the questions reporters ask guys these days? They're all beach balls - never pointed questions. They just want a quick sound bite and get home to their families - nobody truly rocks the boat anymore.

Toronto media doesn't have an Eric Francis, lucky for them.

One of those cases where I'd trust the eye test over the advanced stats.

Wow, guy rarely misses games but it's looking like he's going to be out again for Game 2. Huge hit to the Leafs chances.

I like the Eric Francis’ and Steve Simmons of the sports world. You have to have some anti butt kissers every now and then. Look at the cast of other journalists who feed stupid questions to these guys. You need some over the top takes and not some cookie cutter people who are just happy to be around hockey players.
