Yeah but other teams go through change as well. The problem with these types of analyses is they assume Flames are the only team dealing with that.

I'm not saying he's a good coach or a bad coach.
I don't think the situation was a good one to make that call ... Team that missed playoffs loses their leading scorer before the season starts and then sells off 5 more players all with that hanging over the franchise from June '23 on.

Confirmation bias in its perfection! No matter what he did this year you would have hated him.

I don't think he's a good coach. But there isn't a coach in the NHL who is making the playoffs with this roster.

Nah. The roster wasn’t good enough last year and wasn’t good enough this year either. They had zero game breakers on the team.

Sweet.
What should we do with the extra $10 million?

Give him a team with at least one actual star player, and we will see if coaching is actually the problem. Like just one player who would be a top 3 candidate for a major league award. We don't have a single forward that would be a guaranteed 1st liner on any team in the league. Defense is questionable in that regard too. Not saying coaching doesn't play a role, but ultimately, it's the players on the ice that matter the most.
When your $10.5 million player doesn't show up and is a net negative on the ice more than 50% of the time, the team isn't going to do well.

There is no way you truly believe this?
We had Vezina caliber goaltending until the deadline, and were still out of a playoff spot. The talent was not there, we were about as below average as a team could possibly be.
Where is the talent? We don't have a single player who would be on the first forward line on a good NHL team.

Ha, my favourite thing lately is GoRiders and desire for the rebuild to end after one season, and actually thinking it makes sense.
"We suffered through 1/4 of a season selling off, I don't ever want that again, time to hit up free agency and start our ascent to the Stanley Cup!".

This retool is a 3 year deal.
This year and next, it's all about drafting and developing what's already here and little to no UFA signing save for short term depth.
Year three is when I think Conny goes out and makes those UFA addition splashes.

Name me another team that turned over eight players from its starting roster this season, including three of the starting six on defence.

I think we are looking at 6 years minimum. 3 years would be crazy.

It's not a rebuild though. And I don't think Conny sold a long term retool. Especially as his comments yesterday said as much.
Is 3 years crazy to be competitive? I don't think so. A lot of things have to go right I'll admit but if Conny sticks to his guns I think he can have the rolling into wildcard spots by the time the new rink is online.

Perfect, I was just thinking man I can't wait to be contending for 8th again, it's been too long.

It should be a rebuild. We don't have the players to retool with, we have no 1st line players on the roster outside of Weegar.
I also don't care for sneaking into a wildcard spot every year. I hope they build a proper team that can be a contender. Who wants to be the murky middle team every year? I am tired of being that lol.

This is the way.
Honestly, a young competitive team just getting going and competing for wild card spots is only the beginning for a new core though. Just have to avoid those pesky Harmonic type trades and trust the process.

Gotta temper that though when it comes to the Flames right?
You know there's isn't long term patience for a rebuild, from anybody in or out of the organization.
He'll even I'll be getting a little skittish by year 3, imagine ticket sales for the more impatient ppl putting their money on the table crowd for ticket sales.

The players we draft this year most likely won’t be in the nhl by year 3.

If course I truly believe this. You have an East/West roster playing a North/South game. The offensive system is basically the same as Darryl's with less shots. That's why you have no game breakers. That's why Huby looks like the shell of the player he was, when your system is to gain the zone and then throw everything back to the point it neuters a great passers game. The roster on paper to start the season was absolutely good enough to be a playoff team but when you are playing a system tailored to big forwards screening goalies with a small skilled forward group you are not going to succeed. Go back in Huska's coaching history and show me where he has been successful with any offensive group? He is fine as an assistant coach in charge of the defenseman but he has no clue about forwards. His lineup decisions were also not great and he likes the blender way too much. There is nothing in Huska's pro record that indicates he can be a good head coach. He is a fantastic talker though, I will definitely give him that. He could sell ice makers to people in the Arctic.
