As long as we finish bottom 10 next year I'm good with something like the "Dallas Plan". I don't want to finish with a 11-20 pick and have to give it to the Habs is all.
Otherwise I'd prefer to see us focus on drafting and developing, then supplementing that with some solid FA signings. Having a strong prospect pool and building from within is preferable to trades like Hamonic that ended up costing us in the long run.

He kept stressing that draft for Dallas, so it could be that Conroy wants to draft more often than 3-5 times a season, which I do like

The Dallas plan involves bottoming out.
It just also happens to involve hitting a home run with that bottoming out pick, and drafting two more franchise defining players in that same draft.

“The Dallas plan” is no different than rebuilding, they just happened to nail it in one draft.

I find it hard to predict what the Flames will do next season.
They have a lot of players who are total wild cards, and will also have cap space to utilize for maybe some show me contracts.

Is Kuzmenko a 40 goal 70 point player next year who vaults the Flames PP up the rankings?
Does Huberdeau continue with his 60-70 point pace from the last half?
How much drop off do we see from Sharangovich, Coleman, Weegar after career years?
Do Miromanov and Kylington have another gear as top 4 Dmen?
How much will Coronato, Zary, Pospisil and Pelletier grow?
How will Vladar be when he's finally healthy?
Wolf has elite abilities, will they translate?
What if they sign a guy like Duclair and he scores 30 with Huby again?
Mangiapane is another guy capable of scoring 20-30+ goals too, does he bounce back in a contract year?

This roster isn't devoid of talent. They seem to play well under Huska too, and they seemed to get better all year with his system up until the roster was gutted, and they kind of built back up again as they went on.

The Dallas plan involves getting a little lucky but consistently having excellent scouting and drafting and then giving your scouts as many opportunities as they can to pick, especially earlier in the draft. Calgary’s drafting record since Sutter has been stellar (athletic ranked them as number 2 since 2007, only behind Dallas).. It’s going to be interesting to really see what these guys do over the next couple of years.

They didn't really bottom out, that's kind of the point and why they are being singled out. They just got lucky and won the draft lottery at their lowest point moving them up a bunch of spots to 3rd OA. (IIRC)

Dallas 2017 draft might be the best 3 picks ever made by a team in a single draft.Would be an interesting list to compile of other "3 in the same year" groups.

Great model to emulate, but picking that well in a single draft may never happen again.

I think he mainly mentioned the Dallas model because they had some bad contracts in Seguin and Benn

The drafting philosophy seemed to change to prioritize size over everything else when Darryl came back a couple years ago.

The scouting team is still good and Button is still the head amateur scout. As long as the Flames start re-prioritizing skill and hockey sense over size again, they should be rebuild without a top three pick.
 |
It really didn’t emphasize size at all.

Players surprise and hit a higher ceiling than expected - happens fairly often. And you never know in advance - if it was expected, they would have gone #1OA.

In 1980 Chicago drafted Savard, Larmer and Troy Murray.

Detroit 89 draft was pretty epic too. The Flames also had a really good 84 draft. That really helped the team become a powerhouse.

Dallas is very good at drafting.... in the first two rounds. Not so much after that. Calgary, on the other hand, seems to be good for one NHLer picked in the third or later every year, but their work in the first two rounds is middling (they get players, but not impact ones).
IMO, if the Flames are to be successful in their plan, they need to be a lot less risk averse in the early rounds. No more playing it safe with Yan Kuznetsovs and Topi Ronnis in the second round.

Exactly. Monahan's injuries and Bennett not panning out are what did this team in.

After the Tkachuk trade though, it was the Huberdeau contract that did it.
