11k still feels kind of underwhelming to me when you consider that a lot of those will be partial seasons, but it's undeniably more revenue than they would've generated had they continued with the status quo in AZ.

Which is such a weird phenomenon for me. If the Grizzlies were the new name for Utah, not only would it NOT infringe on merchandise and reputational aspects of the Bruins (they don't 'own' bears and everything associated with that species), it would unexpectedly create an amazing rivalry between the Grizzlies and the Bruins that the NHL could market the hell out of. They're also in different conferences, too. The corporate sports world needs to lighten the #### up.

I'll grant that it doesn't particularly matter how quickly the tickets sell. What's going to be pivotal for the Utah people is that they get those arena fixes done ASAP — and then put a winner on the ice.

SLC/Provo/Orem Metro area is smaller than many other markets, but, SLC getting an NHL team was also a lead news story in Evanston and Boise. The geographic sporting wasteland of the Utah/Wyoming/Idaho area gives a larger reach than other media markets, and so the TV footprint for Mountain states advertising is not insignificant.

Utah’s population is growing, even booming

Utah was listed as the fastest-growing state in the country in the 2020 U.S. Census. That growth doesn’t seem to be slowing down now. Since 2015, Utah has gained nearly a half million people.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall: “This announcement is about more than bringing an NHL team to Salt Lake City - it’s a defining moment in our trajectory, becoming a catalyst for a positive vision that integrates community, connection, and more possibilities for families, residents, and visitors to experience our capital city. I’m thankful for the close partnership with Ryan & Ashley Smith, and the entire SEG team. This is the beginning of a new era that will generate exciting opportunities for our communities, amplify pride and unlock new potential in our downtown core.”
Official support at the outset bodes well for the relocated franchise. It is now up to the SEG expand a fan base.

The municipalities never really seemed to want to work with them. Was that all because they didn't want to work with all those different owners, or was it because the general voting public never demanded it?

Yeah honestly I see a lot of people making it seem like it was just the owner's fault.
It was a failure before he got there. He wasn't the best or even good but let's talk about how every owner failed there as well as most teams hockey wise.

Winnipeg had crazy hype + sold out of their 13,000 season tickets in 2 minutes after going on sale (the waiting queue turned it into 17 minutes). Now they're back struggling again.
Selling 11,000 season tickets over their first full day being out is not that impressive, nor is it a sign of anything to come.
Just gotta hope they attract beyond the first couple years excitement.

Utah Raptors would be a great name. I wonder if MLSE would try to block it?

If the NHL had actually wanted a team in Utah, yes.
In all the talk about potential locations for another round of expansion, there was hardly a whisper about Utah.
I still think this is a case of dumping their problem franchise in a market that they had no plans for. The BoG saved Houston and Atlanta for the next round of extortion expansion.

That there is some of the worst buzzword salad I have ever seen. I got ‘bingo’ three times on my card.
Translated into plain English: ‘This announcement is about bringing an NHL team to Salt Lake City, but I desperately want to make it sound like something more. However, I have absolutely nothing specific to say about it.’

Now that there is a team locally (150miles away) for me, I have a decision to make. I never warmed to converting to rooting for the Jazz, but, one of my sons, and his wife were always Dog fans. For me, I am a Chicago native, and the 'Hawks were my old man's team, with him taking me to my first hockey game, a 1-1 tie on Boxing day,1965, Leafs/Hawks. I may have to consider a 2nd team to cheer for, and, there are no hateful players on the active Dog roster. I will decide once they drop the puck, I guess. I would poll my friends here at CP, if, a. I knew how to make a poll, and b. I knew that the Flames wouldn't crush the Dogs in a write in campaign!

I thought the State Musical Genre was religious music by the Mormon Tubercular Choir!

lol Winnipeg is a Canadian market that was starving for a team again. It’s not even comparable.
Economics are a lot different as well. I know. I placed holds on people’s visas for season tickets for the Jets. They went nuts.
