If you go by history odds are he will sign an extension instead of testing the market.

With where we are at in our rebuild cycle, I’d expect all our pending free agents to test the market. Especially with the cap opening up.
In fact
To be slightly extreme, if they come off of a great year right before they reach free agency in this situation, I might question their sanity if they didn’t test the market

No just 35. Plus he got named captain.
I do wonder if some players will look at Lindholm as a cautionary tale though.

Didn't want to leave, wanted to sign right up until the final hour when the Mrs put her foot down. My point is most impact players re-sign with their clubs.

John Tavares didn't nor did Panarin. It happens when the player has his sights set on a more preferable destination. Its likely going to happen with McDavid and Draisaitl as well.

Ok, now list all the impact players that signed an extension with their current club. That would take a long time. The point is the majority of those types of players re-sign with their teams.

Hockey players get comfortable in a city and a situation and are far more likely to re-sign, no matter how good or bad their club is, unless something specific happens that makes them change their mind. Gaudreau had his family step in (presumably). Would Tavares have left the Islanders for any other team other than the Leafs?

Why do you insist on repeating this story?
It's not true. He wasn't really entertaining signing early on. He didn't even directly receive the first pitch after the season from the flames even though it was focused specifically for him, to give him the impression they were going to make him a franchise legend (allusions to statues and such). He let his agent take the meeting and agent gave a tepid response.

He had months to sign, you even indicated they had basically agreed to terms and were waiting for an opportune time to announce it.
For a guy who wanted to stay, he sure let it go to the final moment.
Now, I agree I think outside influences affected his decision.
But I doubt he was as locked in as you think. US was always in his mind as well.

Repeating the story that multiple people have reported including Frank Seravelli and Pat Steinberg? Are you claiming to know more about the situation then they do? Or Brad Treliving who said they had a deal and then Gaudreau called back at the last hour and changed his mind? You know more than the GM actually involved in the process? Amazing!

Was going to say that too.
He was fooling himself if he signed an extension with that many UFAs on the slate.
Guessing he knows the score.

Go find where I said they had they had agreed to terms and were waiting for an opportune time to announce it? Why in the F do people insist on making #### up on this board to try and strengthen their argument? I never started talking about Gaudreau staying until after the season was over, that he wanted to extend. We know this is 100% true and we also know that Gaudreau and the Flames came to an agreement only for him to have a change of heart at the last minute. Why do you think Conroy used the words "We are going to get that done" part way through last season when asked about Gaudreau? He had every intention on staying up until a last minute change of heart.

Man, I take a couple days away from this site, come back, pop into this thread and, surprise, surprise, people are rehashing the fight about how Gaudreau left!
There is some real damage here.

Yes 35 years old, coming off an average year at best during a flat cap where most teams are capped out. Yes, that’s exactly what I said.
Comprehending is hard for some

The Flames dodged a bullet with Gaudreau. Imagine a world where Gaudreau signs and Tkachuk still wants out and we have Gaudreau and Huberdeau floating around for 10+ a year each. Might have a top 5 pick though.

You are correct that a lot of players re-sign but it's not a given especially with Canadian teams. Aren't you convinced McDavid is going to sign with the Leafs? Also I would put my money on Draisaitl leaving as well so that's two of the top 10 players in the NHL.

It's a fascinating what-if if JG had stayed.
Do we take the Florida deal and sign JH if we already have JG locked down or do the rumored necas+1st?
Does Huberdeau perform way better if JG is on the team. Alot of people have say JH is a support player and needs talent.
Do we do the monahan+1st for Kadri sequence?
I will say with how kadri has been, if we had a good 1st line with JG driving it and a second line with Kadri driving it, that could be a pretty good offensive foundation.
