Default Flooding on the Skeena in Northern BC

http://www.thenorthernview.com/pages...lood/index.htm

If you've ever made the trek on hiway 16 all the way out to Prince Rupert you'll know that from Terace to Prince Rupert that the road is down quite close to the river. Apparently there was a pretty high snow pack in B.C. and this is the result. It's a very scenic valley, and the Skeena as gets ready to drain into the Pacific gets pretty wide. Looks like unless you have an Amphi car you won't be able to get too far out of Rupert though. Amazing what nature can do.

Saw a peice on this during the noon newscast.

Gotta feel sorry for those residents being flooded. Having been through the 2005 flood here in High River, i can understand what residents might be feeling.

I was in Terrace last week when the slide happenned. In fact, I was supposed to be on the highway the morning of the slide on my way to Smithers. I ened-up running late (fortunately) and had to take the Cranberry connector back.. Now even that road is washed out.

I haven't been past Terrace, but 16 is close enough to the river in places between Smithers and Terrace for me to imagine being caught in rising waters while driving it. I have flood issues.

My brother in law and his family have moved back to Houston from Terrace so they aren't dealing with the Skeena...but I wonder how the Maurice River is running right now.

It's really high there too. I have some pictures at work and will post them on Monday.

The cliffs in Moricetown where the natives fish are noticably smaller from the water, and it nearly reaches the train bridge.

Damn, I wish I would have brought my laptop home.

After living 17 years in Terrace, I'm glad to say I never had this happen to me before. But my heart goes out to all my family and friends still out there...I think I have about 6-7 friends already with water in their basements and another few dozen who were evacuated.

Yeah, that whole area of Central BC is having fun times right now. The Fraser in Prince George was really high and that was on Tuesday that I last saw and it was supposed to get worse. Than all those other rivers as you head West that drain into the Skeena were all bursting at the seams too.

But when you get rivers like the Fraser and Skeena starting to flood you feel bad for those affected. Those aren't exactly little back woods creeks and can really cause havoc. A couple years back in Alberta when some of the rivers came up I remember seeing how swollon the Red Deer River was and the flooding that caused. But I couldn't imagine Terrace as the Red Deer is a little stream compared to the Skeena.

hmmm...how long do you think it'll take for that to start to go down? me and my dad were planning on going salmon fishing again this year...not lookin' too good right now...i wonder how this'll effect the fishing...on another note, if you ever have the chance to go river fishing for salmon...do it! it's one of the funnest things you'll ever do...nothing like trying to land a 30 lbs. salmon against the current for half an hour.

They suggest that the flooding should receed by tommorrow. Chances are they'll have the highway open within a week type of thing since it's a major supply route to the area. I wouldn't think it would have a significant impact on the fishing aspect. No doubt there aren't many area's where you can go and beat the fishing you get there though.

That's one of the most beautiful drives a person can make from Prince George to Prince Rupert. I last did it on my motorbike and took the ferry down to Port Hardy from there. Watched the natives spear salmon in Moricetown and farther down the road wondered why all the cars were parked along the highway until I saw all the fishermen on the Skeena. Hope everone comes out of this with not too much damage.
