Going on Wiki, I identified the relocated franchises that kept their names:

Those that have no historical connection to the name:
-Brooklyn Dodgers -> LA Dodgers
-Atlanta Flames -> Calgary Flames
-San Diego Clippers -> LA Clippers

Those names that have no logic in the new location:
-New Orleans Jazz -> Utah Jazz
-Vancouver Grizzlies -> Memphis Grizzlies
-Minneapolis Lakers -> LA Lakers
-Cleveland Rams -> LA Rams -> St Louis Rams -> LA Rams

Those I won't comment on:
-Milwaukee Braves -> Atlanta Braves
-Philadelphia Warriors -> GS Warriors
-Boston Redskins -> Washington Redskins
-Baltimore Bullets -> Washington Bullets

Those that work due to their generic nature:
-Minnesota Stars -> Dallas Stars
-KC Athletics -> Oakland/LV Athletics
-LA Chargers -> San Diego Chargers
-Oakland Raiders -> LA Raiders -> Oakland Raiders -> LV Raiders
-Baltimore Colts - Indianapolis Colts
-St Louis Hawks -> Atlanta Hawks
-KC Kings -> Sacramento Kings
-Chicago Cardinals -> St Louis Cardinals -> AZ Cardinals
-NJ Nets -> Brooklyn Nets

And Those which actually work better in the new location:
-San Diego Rockets -> Houston Rockets

Through this research I have come to the following conclusions:
-you shouldn't name your team after an ethnic nickname/slur
-you shouldn't locate your team in California, KC or St Louis
-The NFL has terribly generic names

I am absolutely uninvested to a large degree, haven't been to a game since 2019 outside of 1 game at Mullett to see The Flames last season so I'm not even close to a die hard fan today.. But I TRULY believe the NHL can work in Arizona.. but it's just such a shame that the team has been run by absolute pretenders since day 1.

GO FLAMES GO
I do feel bad for you Jordan. And ultimately not having fans buying tickets is a big reason why the team is circling the drain.

I think its best for the future of the NHL in Arizona that the Coyotes leave. The team brand is tarnished. Be very hard to convince sponsors and partners to invest in a team that is moving from one crisis to another.

A fresh start with a steady owner is needed.

Calgary had a Great Fire prior to World War I that was used as a pretense to keep the name. The Great Fire is why all downtown buildings had to be made of sandstone.

Would you be eager to buy tickets without any stability to speak of in the entirety of your team's existence??

ALL of the uncertainty wasn't due to the fans.. at all.

Unfortunately. every city has pretty much had a 'great' fire in their history. They were probably just not creative people and couldn't be bothered.

On a positive note, I predict this will light a fire under the Coyotes butts, wanting to win their last games 'for the fans'. By running the table the last few games, they will surpass us in points and give us a better draft position!

It has to be hard, being a fan of the sport, getting behind the team, in a tough but doable marketplace, only to have the team run into the dust by a bunch of clowns.

I genuinely feel for you. Fans in small non traditional markets are often the most passionate. You deserve better.

There are three quick additiions, the Athletics began in Philadelphia back in 1901 and were there for 53 years before moving to Kansas City.

The Braves were in Boston until 1952 when they moved to Milwaukee.

The Chargers moved back to Los Angeles

$2.8 million? Only politicians treat people like dollar signs.

Montreal's total GDP is $233 billion in Canadian dollars as of 2022. Salt Lake City's total GDP is $213.9 billion in US dollars as of 2022.

Salt Lake City is richer, but they're pretty comparable.

I'm not a fan. I'm in California suffering through the sharks' rebuild.

Just more imagining the feeling of losing a team. Particularly through the eyes of a dad with kids who are die hard fans.

It just sucks. Not life threatening stuff. But it would hurt to spend time, money, emotions on something that just up and leaves.

I think a good name is just a good name and doesn't need to be tied to something specific. There are more Coyotes in Texas and California than there are in Arizona. It's a good name regardless. It's just hard to look at the branding and separate the negativity. I don't know how much time would need to pass before that changes, maybe not long... who knows. I wouldn't want to own that brand right away though.

Flames is a pretty generic name anyway. Like Kings or Bruins or Predators.
And you could easily tie it to oil and gas - you used to see gas flares everywhere (that's what every source I see references versus the 1886 fire). Then the Olympics were announced within a year of that first season.

And there are lots of coyotes in Utah - probably anywhere in the USA except Hawaii - so wherever they go they can keep the name

It's really too bad they wouldn't move their final home games to Glendale and let a capacity crowd say goodbye.

It is appropriate that their final game at Mullett will be against the Oilers.
