Smith was asking for team name suggestions back in January. I wouldn't read much in this latest "contest." The formal bid was launched a year ago, and all those incidental details have likely been worked out.
True, although, my understanding is that the Fanatics changes will be minimal. The jerseys will still be made in the same factory in Quebec that has been making NHL jerseys since the 1970s and they're not even going to change the templates for at least a couple of seasons. From what I've seen, the biggest change might be some different fabrics -- like getting rid of the waffle pattern fabric on the shoulders.
Then, you consider the changes the Jazz have made to their uniforms since Smith bought the team, and they might be going with a very minimalist design anyway.

What does the NHL get to gain by going to Quebec City before going to available big TV markets in the US? The NHL only cares about where they'll have the opportunity to grow their revenue in the long term. Quebec City doesn't have as much potential positive impact for the NHL like the vacant big markets in the US does.

According to the data, more than 15.5 million Canadians follow the NHL, with over three in five tracking either all or more than half of the games throughout the season.
When it comes to specific teams, the Montreal Canadiens enjoy the largest fanbase with 9.3 million fans who say they follow the team at least occasionally. The Toronto Maple Leafs have the second-largest following with 8.8 million, and the Edmonton Oilers round out the top three with 6.6 million.
