That bridge is a total nightmare. It should be easy, but it’s the weirdest mix of terribly slow, way too fast, people cutting people off, and people just drifting across lanes. It’s like not everyone could agree to just drive it normal so 30% of people said #### it we’re going to try to cause an accident.

You're right to be frustrated though, when you merge you need to take your opportunities. There 100% are strugglers who think you merge with your break and not your gas pedal.

If they are matching your speed then they're not really struggling...
If there's congestion then yes, the through traffic needs to create a gap. You're missing the part where virtually the entire road is a "gap" except for the one car, yet they manage to accelerate up to speed and exactly parallel that one car.

I see it a lot when folks are trying to merge onto Deerfoot. You are merging onto a road that is 100. Why in the bloody blue blazes are you trying to merge at 50-60!

What drives me nuts is when you make a gap for someone to merge but they're too chicken and start slowing down, it's like they expect you to come to a complete stop to let them in.

Or there's a perfectly good sized gap in front of you, they're halfway into the lane, see you in the rearview mirror and freak out by slowing down almost to a stop and going back into the merge lane that's ending.

As much as I loathe to justify the morons, design needs to be done to cater to them, so something needs to be done there, not sure what though.

Add an exit on the right with a sign that says something like "Shortcut Here!" and it just drops them into the reservoir.

ha! my first thought was a giant boxing glove on a spring that would shoot out and knock them off the road - like you'd see in a road runner cartoon

Yeah but you can't deny that it's a terrible design. You are getting onto glenmore and then the lanes you're in are actually taking you onto 14th and you need to switch lanes on a busy roadway.

Dumb drivers yes but it's an awful design.

I love this lane! I head to the end of the lane and get over. Not my fault you weren't smart enough to use that lane. Same thing with the new right hand lane on Deerfoot NB around McKnight and 64 Ave. It makes the drive through there a lot quicker. Once again, right to the end of the lane and over I come!

Totally, zipper is the way. The whole lane exists and, if necessary, you better believe the right thing to do is use the whole lane.

The two issues there are the people who don’t let anybody in and the people who attempt to “merge” by stopping near the gas station and waiting until they’re let in while there is a ton of lane ahead of them, screwing everybody behind them.

This is one of those roads they should have the left lane end, so the strugglers can just keep right, out of everyone's way. Yes, it means you will have to merge right twice if you don't want to go University, but that's even better as it keeps timid mergers from using that lane at all.

6th Ave going West out of downtown sucks because strugglers get in the left lane but it exits onto 14th St so they end up trying to merge right at the last second. It pisses me off every time.

Yeah I’ve definitley done the same dance next to the merge lane as I do in the grocery aisle. “I’ll hold…. Okay #### I’ll slow… wtf why are you slowing with me??? *speed up…. And they speed up*…. AHHHHHH”.

Nah. When you're already on the road you have the advantage of knowing how fast you are going and having a nice full view of the situation in front of you. It's really not hard to anticipate roughly where the merger will end up.

When you're merging, it's a lot harder to tell if the guy in your mirror is going 20 over or 5 under. Forcing the merger to find the gap is how you get people crawling/stopping to find a cruiseship sized gap.

Even if the merger is going unpredictably fast or slow it shouldn't be an issue (unless you are too). Merging really isn't very hard, but letting someone merge efficiently is beyond easy - it's sad but not surprising how many people don't understand how this should work.

In defense of the original gear grinder I was talking about a very specific set of circumstances. I'd say 9/10 the issue is fair enough, like I said. Weather, other traffic, a short or blind merge lane, that sort of thing

But if you're the only two cars within 200m and the only place the merger thinks they should get in is the 4.5m that already has a car in it? That person is completely stunned. It's like they're drawn to it. Must be the same type of person that can't park straight without having to park next to another car to help them line up.

Yeah, of course the right thing to do is help them out. But still #### that guy and his white camry. Outside of congestion I can't remember the last time I've needed to be 'let' in

Just wait, there are new versions of exactly that problem spot developing on the SW ring road.

For example, despite signs 1-2 kms ahead, people scramble to get over multiple lanes at the last second to get on to glenmore east (right ramp) or t'suu tina south (left) heading east at the signal hill junction.

Easy mistake to make the first time (or couple times), but it's like every second driver is zoned out there and doesn't know which side of the road to be on until the last second.

Heading west at the same junction can be a zoo too, with the backups for that single southbound t'suu tina lane and the rest of every one trying to merge right to get on to sarcee.

This reminds me of a weird situation I had one time.

I was driving west on McKnight east of the airport by where the Esso used to be. I was basically in the same situation as the red Honda in this image: https://maps.app.goo.gl/T384BwUPdrLKLZC29

I was travelling with the flow of traffic and there was room in front of me and behind me but traffic in all three lanes. I was coming back from lunch, so it would have been around 1:00 and traffic wasn't that heavy. This guy was in the merge lane and drove right beside me for the entire length of the lane. There was plenty of room both in front of and behind me, so I didn't feel the need to make additional room for him.

As he got to the end of the lane, he slammed on his brakes and moved in behind me. I looked in my mirror and he was angrily yelling and gesturing.

I still have no idea what he was expecting me to do.
