It will be interesting to see how the Flames tackle the summer. They will need to address the blueline in some way shape or form I believe. Adding a 3-4 would certainly help but would need to be done through short term free agency or via trade.
Kadri and Weegar are interesting to me. I do not think the Flames will shop either but I also do not think either player is overly interested in a long rebuild and where the flames are there isn’t a quick 1 year fix here. Weegar was a bargain in year 1 of his deal but is already 30 and has 7 more years. Kadri been solid and can hit 70pts this year but will be turning 34 next year and still has 5 years left. I think Weegar is easily movable for a strong return and Kadri likely could be dealt to a team looking for all the qualities he brings.
Tough spot because you like to have good vets around when rebuilding but their contracts likely become a problem when this team is looking to ramp things up and sign their young core to long term deals but that is 3-4 years away so perhaps it is not much of a concern?
I am so done with this season and am looking forward to what the draft and free agency bring. If the Flames can somehow win the lottery Celebrini is a game changer and would accelerate the rebuild

O I agree 100%.
I'm just not fully convinced ownership and management is fully bought into a rebuild yet though.

The most absurd dual direction move would be to go through the hoops of trading Markstrom to turn around and offer Stephenson a massive contract and sign him.
So I'm expecting that.

Chandler Stephenson is a #1 center the way Elias Lindholm is a #1 center.
In that he isn't.

As unlikely as it is, if the Flames luck out win the lottery / draft Celebrini you can shelve any Markstrom trade talk.

Why? I don't understand why drafting Celebrini would change our position on trading an aging goaltender.

IMO ownership would see Celebrini as the start and end of a retool and that adding that talent to this lineup would mean going for it. In addition to what could be spent in free agency.

That would be foolish, we already traded away a few top players so will be worse next year, a rookie is not going to save this team. Look at Mcdavid first few years in Edmonton, no playoffs. Bedard this year. He is still an 18 year old.

What does Conroy have to do to convince you? He got rid of every UFA except Kylington.

To be fair, Conroy did offer all of the UFAs a contract at one point this year.
I have to give him credit for adapting, but we easily could have had Lindholm, Hanifin, Tanev all locked up to contracts if they accepted.

Why? A Rookie isn't moving the needle on this team. Why not try for another unprotected 1st in 2026? Similar to the Vegas trade, get a protected 1st in 2025 that might slide to 2026.
If Jersey trades their 2025 first top 10 protected they are 1 injury away from being in the same spot next year.

Lindholm at $9m/year x 8 years was supposedly the offer from Calgary. The only thing that saved Calgary from its own stupidity was Lindholm's greed.

I have heard by multiple people the hardline was actually $8.5M x 8.

Which is still madness.
That would have brought such a dark, terrible 7-8 year stretch for this team.
Can you carry a $10.5M .5ppg and be good? Maybe…we’ll see, but probably not.
Can you carry a 10.5M .5ppg player AND an $8.5M .5ppg player? That’d be unpossible - and no amount of misattributed defensive acumen on Lindholm’s behalf would help that.

On the flip side, I'd love to sign Lindholm to an 8 year- 5.5-6 mil deal this summer.
I anticipate that he would not sign that in Calgary just because.

Rumor was that Columbus kicked tires before Vancouver made the trade for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up back with Gaudreau.

That doesn't make it any better. In no way should we have been offering that.
But I also understand the marching orders from up top were not wanting to rebuild if possible.
