if they win the division, 25th (requires them to be the worst of the division winners, and have all 4 division winners not make the final 4)

If they don't win the division, could realistically get to maybe 22nd at best

Not exactly

29-32 are correct
then come the division winners that didn't make the conference finals
then reverse standings

This draft is a unique opportunity to get that, with the next draft trending to be much more F heavy at the top.
There are 4-6 dmen in this draft that would have gone higher v. the top d drafted last year.
I don't mind the idea of taking a dman now too. I assume we will be picking high in the draft for the next 2 years after this draft.

Dmen take longer to develop, and it could be a perfect scenario to have a very good young dman ready to play big minutes when you draft a high end forward at the top of the 25 or 26 draft.

Looking at a team like NJ who got the high-end forwards first and now are waiting for the high end dmen to develop, they are under achieving so far because D just take longer to dominate on average.

The race, currently:

6) MTL: -5
7) OTT: -3
8) SEA: 0 (fewest RWs)
T9) CAL: 0
T9) BUF: 0
11) PIT: +2
12) NJD: +2
13) NYI: +5

Even though we are currently T9th, we are closer to 12th than 7th. In baseball terms, were are only one game up on 12th place.

I still believe we draft between 10 and 12

When I look at the teams all toiling around in the bottom 5 to 10 in the league, not one team or fan base deserves a lottery win more than the Calgary Flames IMO

Never had a top 3 pick, only team in that group that hasn't.

Too bad "deserve" has nothing to do with it I guess.

This kind of rubbish is precisely why this fan base doesn't ‘deserve’ a top pick. You can't even wait for it to happen before being negative about it.

I am slowly coming to the conclusion that Flames fans, as a general thing, deserve all the suffering they can get, because it's the only thing they are capable of enjoying.

Tell that to Bonded, who has already proclaimed him to be a bust IF the Flames draft him.

admittedly bit of a test here to see if these direct links to Sandman's profiles over at Upside Hockey work +/- useful that I'll be using on socials

Some of Upside's hopeful draft targets for Flames (some admittedly longshots)

The more highlights I watch, the more I want us to get Cayden Lindstrom. He's big, his skating is amazing, and he utilizes his linemates pretty good. I feel like he'll likely be gone when we're up to select but wishful thinking on my part.

I feel for Zary, Coronato, Honzek, Pelletier, Pospisil, Suniev, etc. Busting their ass and still part of the virtual no talent up front group.

If the Flames have some of the stud dmen available and take a forward who they do not think is BPA that would be tragic. I myself would prefer a dman this draft because they are almost certainly drafting top 10 next draft and that draft looks much weaker on the backend, which would leave drafting a top pairing dman to the 2026 draft.

With the number of picks the Flames have I would feel much more confident about them finding some forward diamond in the rough than a dman. I would also feel more confident that they find a good forward with their likely top 10 pick next year or their likely top 10 pick in 2026.

Seems like Ottawa wins the 1st the most when I run that sim, so I think we need to hope for the 7th slot.

Next is Chicago. Celebrini - Bedard seems dangerous.

Winning the lottery takes all the guessing out of it that's for sure.

What makes you think he cares, or can do anything about it? He answers to 32 owners, not one.

Because he let them draft Bedard after a scandal that would have stripped any other team of their 1st round pick? I don't trust anything Bettman is in charge of when it comes to his darling franchises.
