well, way out here in the boonies (4 hrs away from calgary...1.5 from edmonton...half an hour from camrose...if anyone knows where that is...) we ended up getting an inch and a half....my uncle, who lives about 6 miles away got 4...it was just absolutely pouring...thunder, lightning, the whole deal...nice summer storm. and great for the fields!

Up here in Tuscany the power went out about 5 times over the course of 2 hours. I swear several lightning strikes hit the power lines 3 houses away from me.

it's not jsut 7.5cm of rain. it's 7.5cm of rain in 1.5 hours. get that much rain over a day, it's not that big of a deal. get that much in a matter of hours and any city will have problems.

I am a student in the fall/winter, and you have no idea how many times I get onto Anderson Rd and it's backed up to 24th street so I turn around and go home....

And now I work right near the University so it's still a big commute and today I was tempted to go home, but work is different than school.

Keep in mind the cubic footage. For example, water will run off the roof of your house. If your house has a 1000 square foot roof, that would translate into over 7,000 litres of water that came off your roof.

Add in driveways, sidewalks, and roads (ie any place that water will not just soak into the ground) and you get an idea of what kind of volume of water we are talking about.

I had a presentation to deliver today as well as a midterm to write and I take the exact same way, 14th to glenmore to crowchild. What I have to say on the topic of my commute to school today cannot be posted on CP, and that is that.

I have read that 1mm of rain is equivalent to 1cm of snow.

So, imagine 75cm of snow being dumped on the city in one day. Or, more accurately, in a matter of 2-4 hours.

Yup frozen water to liquid is about 10:1. Dry snow on like in calgary can actually be at up to a ratio of 30:1 so that would be............

This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.

Conditions are also favourable for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes. These types of funnel clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms and normally do not have the energy to reach the ground.

Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements. If threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.
At 12 noon a thunderstorm is located 15 kilometres southwest of Gleichen and is moving to the east at 40 km/h. The thunderstorm has produced Nickel sized hail, heavy rain and with reports of funnel clouds near Langdon.

I just walked into my bosses office and it looked pretty dark to the N/NE of where I am. I'm on the eastern edge of the city at glenmore trail. That's the only update I can give as I don't have any other windows to look out.
