Well, at this time (I have only really started going through the top 60 prospects at the moment), I believe his top ~10 ranking thus far.

Falkovsky is not a comp. He was ranked 91st by central scouting for North American players in 2016.

Silayev is doing well as a 17 year old against men in the 2nd best league in the world. How good he will eventually become is the question mark. I liked that Falkovsky pick, but it was apparent that he wasn't anything special when the Flames didn't sign him even though he looked like he was putting up good numbers (or did they trade him? I can't remember now). Way more holes in his game, and he didn't have the skating that Silayev has right now.

I think NJ is the team that takes him, but he probably falls a little bit further back. I would, however, be shocked to see him much past pick 20. Kid will be an NHL'er quick, but how good he becomes is the question mark from what I have seen/read. I would rather the Flames pick something more certain and that has more offensive ability to start building around. If the Flames had a few top-end offensive guys at various positions to build around, then I would have zero qualms about taking the chance on this kid at around 10 (again, saying this before I go through the list myself). I don't think the Flames are in a position to take him without having more dynamic pieces in the system.

For you me, it’s too much of a “you can’t reach size” pick, which gives me PTSD.

I’d rather they just take one of the dmen that are average height but are showing best-in-class skill sets.

What is most intriguing about Silayev is that he is an excellent skater for a guy who is 6'7". Chara was nowhere near as good a skater as Silayev at the same age. Chara was also way more raw as a prospect, whereas Silayev's game is surprisingly polished. As such Silayev has a really solid foundation to build upon. That being said, I have no idea what his true ceiling really is. He needs to use his size better, his offensive game is underwhelming, but these are likely a byproduct of an 18 year old playing in the KHL. Defensively his game is mature beyond his years.

So where would he be ranked if he were 6’0”?

If it’s in the 2nd/3rd round, then it’s exactly the type of pick I hope the Flames don’t get sucked into.

If Silayev is still on the board for the Flames Vancouver pick, which I hope will be in the low 20s, then I don't know how you pass up a unicorn like him. But it seems very unlikely he'll still be available by that point.

And given the Flames recent interest in smooth skating Russian d-men...

Well Chara wasn't picked until the third round. But GMs now know a Chara is possible. So a guy like Silayev is going to get snapped up a lot earlier.

But like Chara, Silayev could be a project. Chara didn't really start putting his NHL game together until he was about 24. So Flames fans may have to be patient with a prospect like him.

Chara also wasn’t drafted until much later. Those behemoths seem like they are usually long shots. Unless they are oozing high end skill, I wouldn’t burn a 1st rounder on one.

This team has virtually no forward talent anywhere in the entire organization.
Unless someone truly special falls into our laps, I don’t want a defenseman with our 1st.

Silayev worries me because I think his crazy KHL start to the season inflated his value a bit.
He's probably a guy you would have expected to be in the back half of the first round based on his play and production in prior seasons.

But he was on a crazy heater to start the KHL season, skyrocketed up the draft boards, and then the rest of the year his production was more in line with expectations of a guy his age in the KHL.

He had 6 points in the first 6 games, and then 5 over the last 57 games.

Parascak, Ritchie, Basha, or Vanacker with the Canucks pick would be nice. For D, I like what I hear about Henry Mews.

Don't think it'll be an issue. Comparatively, Michkov was signed for another 2 years (or was it 3?) and if rumors are true, told teams he only wanted to play in certain places or he wouldn't come over.

Haven't heard any such thing from Demidov.

If all things in this draft were black and white, Demidov is the clear #2 in this draft. Since nothing is black and white in this draft, he could slip simply due to the quality of defensemen and the lack of centers. But I do t think being signed 1 more year in Russia is going to have any effect on things.

Now if he re-signs a new deal before the draft (if they do that in the khl). Then yeah that'll be something of an issue.

Letourneau, Boisvert, Artamonov, Lucas Petterson all good candidates as well.

What's the absolute best the Vancouver pick can end up being?
Can't remember if reg season stats apply to rankings after round 1.

The team also doesn't have a top pairing d prospect.
This draft is a unique opportunity to get that, with the next draft trending to be much more F heavy at the top.
There are 4-6 dmen in this draft that would have gone higher v. the top d drafted last year.

29 & 30 - conference losers
