He's actually looked really good in Tampa Bay since getting traded. They may try to hold on to him if he's willing to take a one year deal that sets him up for a bigger payday. DeBrusk is pretty meh and redundant as the team already has an abundance middle six forwards. Maybe a change of scenery would do well for him but I would tread with caution in regards to money and term.

Jake debrusk? Duclair ? As far as I’m concerned flames need to get rid of some wingers not add any. Ideally they pick up a center so they can move shararngovich back to wing .

I have no doubt that this is mangiapane last year as a flame.

How do we get rid of mangiapane? At this point in our rebuild, one more year doesn’t really make a lot of difference and he is really looking like a contract you just let expire instead of retaining or spending an asset to get rid of

With retention, Mangiapane is likely a very interesting target for multiple teams.

At worst you're getting a very capable third liner who plays hard and can contribute on a regular basis. At best you are getting a top 6 winger who can score goals both at 5v5 and on the PP he maintains the same style of play previously mentioned.

The market for Mangiapane would be quite large if he only made 2.9 million (50% retained).

I doubt even at $3 million there would be much interest in Mangiapane. I think a 3rd rounder plus a meh prospect is the best we'd get.

I wonder if Conroy is just setting us up on this one. Talking about being a player in free agency only to do what the Flames did around 2013. Sign guys like Raymond, Jones, etc. guys to have round your youth. In this case it would be someone like Barrie.

Though I could also see him moving someone like Mangiapane, retained, and our 2nd 1st round pick for Chabot.

What he should be doing is taking on bad contracts for picks.

But what do I know.

No matter what the direction of the franchise, they need to sign another NHL centre.

Henrique, Wennberg, Roslovic - whoever’s cheapest.

Much? I dunno about much... but there would be some. That return tracks with what I figure though (I'm thinking a 2nd rounder straight up but 3rd + prospect is probably an equivalent. I'd make that deal (albeit I'd try to get a cap dump contract in lieu of retention if it's pre-July 1 so I can hopefully use the remaining retention slot on Kuzmenko or vice-versa). Mangiapane won't help us do anything before his contract runs out, the money is a sunk cost, and we have guys that need NHL icetime/experience (Pelletier specifically). I like Mangiapane but it's time for us to start working in the guys that will be part of the next team and for Mangiapane to go someplace where he'd be more useful.

I bet the Leafs would be interested... they have a Bertuzzi/Domi sized holes in their forward line-up and Treliving would be familiar with him (clearly liked him enough to draft/sign/extend him).

Middle 6 wingers are a dime a dozen.
It's going to be difficult to clear mang or kuzmenko out. Mang with retention can maybe get you a third.
Kuzmenko probably costs you to move.

Not sure what Winnipeg's cap situation looks like but this would be the idea. An older guy making a bit too much that we could take on at the full cap hit for picks/prospects.

In Schmidt's case its a position of need too.

Based on what we've seen from Markstrom this year, a lot can change in a short amount of time.

If Mangiapane and/or Kuzmenko are playing reasonably well prior to next year's trade deadline, they can conceivably increase their value.
As far as pending UFAs go, I don't think the cap hits are that restrictive - especially when Conroy seems to be good at getting double retention.

Wait, Mangiapane (with retention) plus a first for Chabot? Ottawa Chabot? If so, just let Mangiapanes contract run out.

I would think the chance of that happening is less than zero.

Duclair got a third at the deadline and he produced pretty well on a terrible Sharks team. So at 50% maybe you can get a third for Mangi but the market is always full of these middle six wingers and most of them don't even get moved.

Sure... but there is an upper limit to how much they could reasonably increase it and I don't think it's large enough to offset the cost of denying the ice-time to up-an-comers.

Yes, Mr. insider... It's the guy you love to hate on.

If the Flames are mathematically eliminated with 5 games remaining I don't see why he wouldn't sit multiple vets, starting with Markstrom.

Vets still like stats. They are mostly on longer term deals but it doesn’t go down well.
